Default Astros trade

Astros deal three for pair of Rockies pitchers

By BRIAN MCTAGGART
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

Just four days after losing pitcher Andy Pettitte to the New York Yankees, the Astros today traded for Colorado Rockies righthanders Jason Jennings and Miguel Ascencio in exchange for righthanders Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh and outfielder ***** Taveras.

“It’s obviously a big piece of the puzzle to try to solve all offseason, get that solid No. 2 starter and put him in the rotation,” Astros general manager Tim Purpura said.

Solid No. 2 starter? The guy went 9-13 last year and has a career ERA of 4.74.

It sucks to see ***** T go. I hope Jennings can do a little better than 9-13 this season.

In his defense, he did have an ERA under 4 last season and he has been pitching in Coors field.

We'll see what he can do this season. I mean Pettitte was 14-13 and he would cost 9 million more than Jennings.

Man, I see Taveras killing us in the near future....I dont think aquiring the pitchers was a bad thing but giving up Taveras might be....

Taveras was a magician in the field but was a serious liability at the plate...he didn't walk or get on base nearly enough to be an effective lead off man imo, but I think we will def miss his speed. I like the move to aquire another solid pitcher, lets just hope that he performs at a high level in the confines of the juice box.

Can't wait for the season to start so we can see how this all plays out!

That is something I overlooked.

They were gonna have to make room for Carlos Lee (still not sure I approve of that deal). Sux to Willie T go though. They will miss him in the outfield & in those squeeze situations. I think Taylor Bucholz will be good, just not in the near future.

Sigh. I would have loved to have made this deal with Freddie Garcia instead of Jon.

He may have, but thats about all he did. I hate seeing him go, I really liked him and I thought he stepped into a tough role when he took over for Beltran, but he wasnt anything special at the plate.

His speed inflated his average alot. He didnt drive runs in, and honestly last year he didnt take advantage of his speed. He should have 70 sb's easy, but how many did he end up with?

This is very true. He was picked off a few times too. He needs to work on his lead and he needs to go head first back to 1st base rather than going back on his feet. It was because of this, he didn't get big leads resulting in fewer stolen bases.

I hate to see ***** go, but I'd rather have a team that has a solid #2 or #3 guy and Chris Burke in CF than have a team with Buchholz, Hirsch, and Sampson/Ailbers as #3,#4, and #5 with ***** T in CF.

A serious playoff team can have Burke in center, but it cannot have a combo of those 4 pitchers making up 60% of the starting rotation.

I'll miss the fun ***** T. brought, but I think we got a good pitcher in return... and a pitcher we really needed.

Since Jennings earned $4.5 million last year...this does mean we have quite a bit more money to spend correct? We payed Andy around $16 million last year. He is gone. We paid Bagwell $17 million last year, he is gone. We paid Clemens $12 million and he may be gone. Lee cancels out Bagwells money. What did Williams sign for? If we don't sign Huff, that's another $8 million or so we have freed up.

We should have more money to spend, correct?

Yup. I think they're still looking for another veteran pitcher. Don't know if we're going to find a decent one for 8 million though the way this offseason has gone.

Mulder or Suppan would be nice. We could get Mulder on the cheap for 1 year.

How many of those "hits" were bunts? I am not sad to see him go, his bat was truly ineffective, and thats just about what we need most. Its great he could lead off bunt, but that only works in that situation. In another inning, when it is 7-8-9-1, he was very unreliable.

Hopefully, they dont try to pursue Clemens. As much as I'd love to see him in an Astros uniform next year, I think it will hurt them in the long run. Personally, I think they should have made a serious run at Barry Zito.

They could have structured the contract and deferred a majority of what he was owed until the 5th or 6th year of the contract and then they have two #1 starters, and we have another lefty.

As much as I'll miss *****, I think stocking up on pitching is a smart move.

Hopefully Garner gets his **** together and realizes that Biggio needs to sit on the road but still start at home. That guy still kills the ball at MM but can't do on the road. This will give Burke an opportunity to get in the mix at 2B at home and the outfield on the road. Have him in left with Luke in center and the fatty Carlos in right. I even heard Purpurra talk about bringing up Hunter Pence, so hopefully we'll finally have a chance to see how he can perform against big league stuff.

I don't see how any team could benefit negativily from Roger Clemens being on their team. That said, I don't think the Astros are going to be pursuing him hard... they'll probably say "You know how much the check is for and where to pick it up if you want to pitch. Hope to se you soon."

If we would have made it to the playoffs last season, he would have been a wrecking ball for us.

To be perfectly honest, I'm quite tired of Clemens' bullshit. He's a great pitcher, but his indecision to play and his 1/2 season pitching schedule is lame.
