Any good places to watch bands play in Houston?

I'm goin down to houston to do some musical research and I'm wanting to know the best places to see good local bands play. I don't mean venues like verizon or the staples center. Stuff like the door, liquid lounge, and places that can host national acts but at the same time local bands. TIA

Are you looking for rock bands, or any frm of music.
Rice University offers free concerts during the school year. I've been to a couple of them, and they are pretty good. Obviously, it is classical music from the 4 main periods of history. They have 3-4 groups of 2-6 members, mostly strings with a piano. They even had a harpsichord during one of the performances
