Default How to tell if a ring is real gold or not?

I have a gold ring nugget (don't ask why I have it) and it doesn't have any stampings on the inside of it where it states what karat of gold it is. How can you tell if its real gold and what karat gold it is?

Well it didn't stick. So I take it that gold isn't magnetic? Any way to tell what karat gold it is?

Wear it for 24 hours. If your finger turns greeen (where the ring was), it's fake as ****.

Or, go to Goode's.

Don't get me lying, but a trip the mall and a stop at a couple of different jewelers should get you the answer.

I had no idea about the kits where it tells you what karat it is. Its definitely not magnetic, but I have no way of telling what karat gold it is. Thanks for all the help.

I'm ashamed to say and keep in mind, this was 7-8 years back, but I used to wear this ring. My finger never turned green.

It's probably real, and in that 7-8 years, the price of gold has skyrocketed.

I saw a show about gold on the history channel a while back.

Some country *** people back in the day (<1800's) had a 40lb gold nugget using it for a door stop. Some guy came through and bought it from them for like $5 (they had no idea what it was). They got punked.

So once I determine what karat gold it is, how would I find the value of it?

Like stated before, they do a chemical test with some kind of acid I believe.
Also, not everyone will have there finger turn green if its fake, it depends on your body chemistry and everyone reacts differently.

No, I got the part about how to tell what karat gold it is, but what I wanted to know is how to tell how much it will be worth?

look up the going price of gold and see how much the ring weighs. this will get you a close estimate on how much you may be able to get for it.

Let's qualify that statement for a second.

PURE GOLD is $626 per TROY OUNCE or 1.75 standard ounce (and is extremely dense thus heavy but it's all the other crap that they add to it that makes it LIGHTER so to get to an ounce you'd have to have BUTT loads of it). What he's got is probably an alloy (means stuff is mixed in). The gold that people wear is based on % of how much real gold is in it. For example, 24k 100% (thus why 24k is extremely soft), 18k is 75% gold, 14k 58.5%, and 10k is 42%.

For current gold prices click HERE

Now, that being said if he takes it to a pawn shop he's not going to get the full value (they will only give scrap gold price NOT retail price of the actual cost of the gold). Have it tested!

He should goto a jewler and have it melted down and made into something (but will need more of it depending on what he wants needs).
