I was wondering the same thing. I think mech is a mech but you just speclize in GM, ford, bmw, or what ever program you take. It will be easier to get a job with ford then GM. I am going go to UTI to I am taking the body repair class then auto tech.

Most of the the time the instructors don't have any dealer exp, they just have a degree. And stay away from the slacker crowd too. Come graduation time you will start out with a calss of 25-30 and end up with a class of about 10-11 with only 5 that made it to graduation. Most of the time Teachers are the ones that couldn't hack it turning wrenches which is why they teach. Get your ASE out of the way too and that will help. Most of your core Academic classes are fairly easy, just stay on top of the math stuff.
As long as you stay out of Storman Norman's way (if he is still the director) than you should do good.
I don't know if Mr. Thomas or Mr. Jackson are still teaching there, but both know alot. You won't learn a lot of performance stuff in there, but you will learn the basics of the Mod Motors and how to build and tune them which is good info that can make you some money on the side. Also pay very close attention to the powerstroke section of the course too. The transmission and rearend stuff is a pain!!!!!! thats were most people flunk out. On our exam we had to put together a Manual and an automatic and label each gear which is not fun, but its different for each teacher.
GOOD LUCK!

Peace,
Craig.
As for being a mechanic, I would think that a school like UTI would be the way to go, as long as you pay close attention and study hard. It just didn't offer what I wanted in the way of performance.
