If you ever get off the road in a 2wd diesel, you might wish you had 4wd. There's alot of weight on the front end.

Well, as far as just driving around pastures up on my farm, I've never had a problem, now if you mean offroading as in mudding or climbing over rough terrain, that would be considered 'using' the 4x4. In other words, if you don't buy the truck with the intent do get offroad a great deal, don't get one, it's usually more of a headache than an asset. I've had both 4x4 & 2WD trucks & I've almost never needed 4x4, but I have had 4x4's that I had with the intent to get offroad, and did so in a very violent manner, lol. I had 2 at one time...the other my buddy would follow me to my offroading spot & park it so we'd have a truck to unstick my main 4x4, lol.

The whole truck is heavy for that matter....if you know you do 99.9% of your driving around the city...chances are, you don't need a 4x4.

They are well worth it in my opinion. At least the Duramax & from what I've heard the 7.3 Ford & cummins motors are all great motors. As stated above, I think the Allison puts the GM's a little above the crowd. Let me put it to you this way, will a couple thousand in mods you can be draggin stock mustangs & ricers with 3 other full grown men in your crew cab as you laugh your asses off....it's truly fun!

My previous dually longbed Dodge had a better turning radius than my 1/2-ton GMC gasser. I was very happy with that truck, so I bought another Dodge. The Cummins diesel is the best engine, and is rated a higher duty level than the Ford/Chevy. People want to complain about the Dodge tranny, but both of my trucks are surviving just fine with 400 rwhp and 800 ft-lbs torque (tuner/exhaust/intake). Most of the big truck guys I know enjoy the GM trucks for their interior, but for real work and towing they use their Dodge trucks. Ford 6.0L engines simply suck, all of the industrial companies around Houston use Dodge or GM for real work (mostly Dodge).

My biggest complaint about GM is that they didn't carry many vehicles in stock at the dealership. Everywhere I went I would have to custom order a diesel. Ford and Dodge have them sitting on the lot in just about every color and combo you can want. Dodge is a much better value for the buck also, it will cost an easy $5K less for a similarly equipped Dodge compared to Ford/Chevy.

It is also nice to be able to put wide 33" tall tires on the Dodge without needing a lift

Nice truck Nineball. Ever taken it to a track?

I think I may try to take mine to a track this weekend now that I have a big clutch in it. I had to upgrade to a 13.25" Southbend clutch because when I took it to have a B&W gooseneck hitch installed, the son of the owner of truck accessory place took mine for a ride with my chip turned ALL the way up and when I went to pick the truck up, the clutch was so weak I couldnt even get on the freeway. I was pissed but couldnt do anything about it. BTW, if you get an 03-06 Cummins, get a Smarty programmer. They will absolutely walk all over those Bully Dog crazy larry programmers....and bring the intersection to a stop if you so desire due to the black smoke.

By the way thank you all for your input so far, and did I say LS1Tech was badass? Thanks Nineball( Tony) for stepping in.

Get an 06 Mega Cab 4x4 with the Cummins and give it a little 3" lift with 33's. I doubt you'll regret it.
Don't forget...the HO cummins didn't come out until the 04.5 model year.

I am selling my 2000 F250 with 103k on it....ready for another 150k easy. https://ls1tech.com/forums/vehicles-sale-non-lsx-powered/693300-2000-f250-xlt-turbo-diesel-looking-driver-tow-vehicle-your-f-car.html

It's been a great truck and will be for the next owner. If you read my post you can see most of the 'gotchas' on owning an F250 Powerstroke, all of which I have dealt with.....

Good luck!

being a diesel mechanic i know a few things that might set you straight. if your looking for the absolute best diesel pickup, 2000-2002 dodge is the only way to go, especially if you are getting a standard transmission. the dana rearends are still in these year models. twice the rearend as the american axles that are in the 2003 and newer dodges, and they still have mechanical injectors. if you are set on a new truck and you go with a dodge, try to find a new '06 model, or an early '07 model that has the 5.9L cummins. YOU DO NOT WANT THE 6.7L cummins as of yet. they are still having too many bugs in the exhaust system. also if you purchase a common rail cummins, (2003 & newer dodge) the best thing you can do to prevent severe breakdown is put a water/fuel seperator filter on it. simply buy the filter housing and water stop filter, splice into the fuel line, be sure to use marine grade fuel line and mount it on the frame rail between the fuel tank and engine. the biggest problem with the common rail cummins is the fuel filter system. small peterbuilts, freightliners, and big fords with the common rail 5.9 have as many as 3 fuel filters and arent having near as many injector problems as the dodges. low sulfur diesel has water blended with it to wash away hydro carbons thus resulting in major electronic injector problems....no matter which brand you buy: ford, dodge, or chevy. now its time to use some common sense. the 5.9L & 6.7L cummins are inline 6 engines, meaning they have 6 individual throws on the crankshaft unlike a V8. meaning they dont have to be revved as high to produce the same amount of power as the V8. ford and chevy can talk all they want about low end torque, they dont have it. the duramax has a connecting rod that looks like it came out of a stock 350 chevrolet besides having aluminum heads. the 6.0L powerstroke has a major problem of running away with themselves from an idle and bouncing off the rev limiter until the engine explodes. the 6.4L powerstroke has only 4 head bolts per cyl. and they are lifting heads left and right. also the lets compare something else: gear ratios. dodge's standard rearend gear ratio on a common rail is 3.73:1 with an optional 4.10:1. ford standard gear is 4.10:1 with an optional 3.73:1, 4.56:1, and 5.13:1 ratio. the duramax has a standard 4.10:1 and a 3.73:1 optional. now if duramax and powerstroke have so much low end power, why do they such lower gears than the dodge. remember less rpm and less moving parts make a cheaper and longer lasting engine. also whichever diesel engine you buy remember to put a good fuel additive in your fuel to prolong injector & injection pump life. good luck in whatever you buy.

Duramax only comes with 3.73. The 4.10 is an option for the 8.01 or 6.0 gas motor.
