Default Is it legal to rig a horn switch/button to pass inspection?

My friend needs a new horn switch for his '97 Mirage, but the dealership said he'd have to buy a whole new airbag, which ranges from $500-1000.

Yes!

As long as you can reach it while sitting in the driver seat then it shouldnt be any problem. I used to have one rigged up on an old beater and they passed it no problem!

+1 for it's okay

My dad's '72 Nova has a switch box for the fuel pump, fans, line lock, etc. We took off the electric fans and wired a horn to it. The switch is even labeled "Fans" and he still passed.

Ok. Cool. Fortunately, I found an airbag on ebay, which should have the horn switch/pad, for only $50. The dealership wants $500-1000.

Yep, you can do it. I had to rig one up before on the bottom of my steering column on a beater car I had one time.

if its a 96 or newer has to have everything work on it the way it was made from the manufacture.

In addition to the switch needing to be reachable, it technically needs to be accessible without removing the driver's eyes from the road. I just got my Inspectors Liscense about 2 months ago.

he is correct but he did leave out that it is legal to use a horn button and must be in drivers reach but it also cannot have any exposed wiring! so if you do hook it up make sure you tape up the wires real good.
