Default DSL connection became really slow yesterday

I have the 3-5 Mbps package with ATT. Yesterday, it started to fluctuate between 500 and 1.5 Mbps or so. I did add a Linksys $100 wireless router, but this desktop is hardwired to it. The connection was also great a day or so after I put it in, too. What's the deal? Could there be a problem with the ISP?

It could be multiple things. As for the router.. check your speeds.. take the router out and check again. Just because its hard wired doesnt mean anything. I've seen alot of problems with the linksys routers recently and you made need to download a newer firmware even though its brand new. I had that problem myself. Of course it could of been a fluke or the isp itself.

I'll bypass the router in a second and see if the speed increases. Where would I download the newer firmware? The Linksys website?

Well, it's the stupid router. My bandwidth went back to normal when I plugged straight into the DSL modem. What should I do?

go to the linsys website and download the newest firmware. If you need help with that call the linksys support number. You will get some arabian guy or girl named John or jane but they can walk you through it. Afterwards you will want to shoot yourself but it will be fixed. I had to do the same thing... brand new out of the box. If for some reason that doesnt work take it back and get a netgear or something else. It should work though.

Ok. Mission accomplished. Firmware is updated and the problem seems to have been rectified. Thanks, guys.

Make sure you have it properly filtered as well. That will cause major problems. Phones, alarms and especially dishnetwork receivers.

Well, I updated the firmware the day of my original, and the speed went back up. Now, it's lagging again like it did before I upgraded the firmware.

Did you set a passcode for the wireless? There's probably someone (neighbors) leeching off your wireless.

Yeah, I set up a passcode. Well, now, the stupid connection is where it should be. Could be storm related? IDK.

Is this a new connection all together or just the wireless router being added on? If it's new, you might want to call your ISP and have them run a line test.

I added the wireless router last week. My brother uses the wireless part for his laptop, but this desktop is hardwired to the router.

Got any 2.4GHz cordless phones nearby? They'll kill the signal. My wife can't talk and surf at the same time.
