Thumbs up A smoke-free night out in Houston

A few of us went out in Midtown last night, and we were pleased to find that the smoking ban in public places has been started. Came home around 2:30 without smelling like an ashtray. We hit Pub Fiction and Red Door, it was busy at both places last night.

cigarette smoke

Do the somkers have designated areas to smoke outside....or they cant somke at all??

California has had a smoking in buildings ban for a while now and it seems to work very well.

As a smoker, I have to ask: What restaurants didn't have non-smoking tables to prevent the "healthy people" from smelling like an ashtray? Nine Ball, I'm glad that you had a good time, and a chance to reap the rewards of a political victory against the Houston smokers, but I have to admit I feel discriminated against when I'm not free to exercise even bad habits because the city took away the rights of the few business owners that would allow it. Sorry to go off the deep end on this one, but a topic I feel strongly about has been brought up. I've said my piece now. That is all.

These aren't restaurants, they are bars/clubs we went to. Restaurants didn't bother me since they had two different seating areas, but smoky clubs sucked. Why should anyone be forced to breathe your 2nd hand smoke if they want to go out and enjoy an evening at a bar? Non-smokers have just as much right to be there as smokers do, but they shouldn't have to live with the potential health consequences of someone who decides to coat their lungs with tar.

My Aunt died about 20 yrs too early due to smoking. Her body was perfectly healthy, but her lungs were gone. Seeing her at the hospital in her last days, using a machine to breathe for her, was enough to get me to quit smoking forever. I'd suggest any smokers go visit the hospital and take a look at some smoking victims, it is an eye opener.

Been like that in Austin for about 1 and a half years now. Smokers can either go outside or smoke on balcones and so forth. Believe me, I've worked in bars for a long time and it is very nice to come home and not smell like smoke.

That is one of the really big reasons I dont go out here. In Lubbock they have had this ban in effect for a long time and I loved going out and not smelling not smoke. Here in TN they still allow it and it drives me insane to come home and I can still smell that crap.

I feel the same way. My mom is on a machine right now and still smoking, that's just plane crazy. I've got 3 brothers and 1 sis and none us smoke after smelling it all our life.

I was in a casino in canada last week. They don't allow smoking. Much better than Vegas casinos.

I haven't been to Red Door in a while in, but they have a section I believe on the top floor where it's an open air patio sure you can still smoke up there. I'm pretty used to have to going out side to smoke any way. A lot of the bars I go to have patio areas, so for a lot of place it isn't that big of a deal, just go to the patio which any big place will have couple small taverns I go to dont have that but most do. If you don't smoke I can under stand not wanting to smell it, I hate the smell of it when I'm trying to eat and I smoke so I can under stand a non smokers perspective.

I wanna go out tonight just because i wont wreak afterwards! Honestly though, I can understand how a smoker might feel cornered on it, but think of it like this, having a smoking section is like having a peeing section in the pool.
