Default Is my '06 Duramax diesel going to pass inspection without a cat?

I've heard/read that diesels don't have to have cat(s). Is this true? I also don't have a muffler, is that going to be an issue too? I have to get an inspection tomorrow and I want to know before I waste my time and money.

Also, aren't diesel inspections good for 2 years and don't have emission testing?

So don't have to have a cat, the muffler is not going to fail me, inspection only lasts 1 year, and there's no emission testing?

I could of swore the sticker lasted 2 years for diesels. Thanks.

actually depending on where u have it done the muffler will fail you, on diesels you don't have to have a Cat but you do have to have a muffler

Haha.. Don't have anything on my '99 F350. Gutted cat/no muffler.. Still pass inspection. Maybe because my Dad's friend does it here at the local GM dealership. Oh, and my Dad is about to get certified for state inspection!

I believe on 07 or 08 and newer they are doing the full inspection on diesels. If it is older it is just a safety inspection. My truck is straight piped and have had it inspected with no problem.

Your truck came with a factory cat, most older diesels did not. If your inspector knows that your truck came with a cat and he finds it missing, he can fail you.

coming from an inspection man myself: if your truck came with a cat, it must have a cat to pass. if your diesel has a turbo, it does NOT have to have a muffler to pass.

With my luck, I'll find someone ******* or person who inspects by the books and will fail me because of no cat.

Any friendly inspections in the Alvin, Pearland, Friendswood, etc. area?

95LT1963, I'd rather have a Duramax than a HaveAStroke.

You will fail with an 06. I have the same truck. Because of the new emissions laws you have to have a cat and a muffler. I believe they scan the computer to see if there are codes set which is pretty common if you delete the cat and don't turn that off in the computer (or put a finger stick in line). The inspector can also look underneath which is pretty likely. Only the original inspection is good for 2 years. Afterwards it is every year. I have not hit that point yet so I have not had mine done. That is why I am not certain if they test the tailpipe or just scan the computer.

Did you hang on to your factory exhaust? I would just stick that back on and go get it inspected.

You mean the famous 6 liter that has helped GM and Dodge take back tons of the diesel market and is the cause of multiple lawsuits between Ford and Navistar??? Not too mention GM is the only one with the Allison. I wouldn't have any other auto.

Ok, so I took it to Kwik Kar yesterday evening at 5:30 pm (closes at 6:00 pm) and they whipped right through it. Literally less than 15 minutes. I just washed my truck Sunday, so it was clean when I rolled up there. I figured they just saw a newer truck, in tip top shape, with a bunch of add-ons, etc. that they knew there wouldn't be anything wrong. All they did was flash the high beams and do the turn signals. I'm not even sure if they plugged it into the computer.

LeadfootDuramax, when I used to have the Predator tuner, I had a Fingerstick/EGR blocker plate. But when I stepped up to a real programmer (PPE), it has an automatic EGR disabler, so I ditched the Fingerstick. PPE or EFI Live is the only way to go, but the PPE is hands down the best handheld. I have no codes.

When you start running those hot tunes, you can still blow the EGR open and have problems. Most guys are running the blocker plate with the disable from the PPE. The blocker plate is insurance to guarantee this doesn't happen and cause problems.

How does your tranny like the PPE? Are you running a Transgo Jr kit??
