LOL on the comments about Operators. Being an Operator, Contractors come in the plant make a mess dont clean up after themselves, dont know what they are working on half the time and ops is heavily relied on to keep you safe using a loto system. If you think its a cake walk its not. Yea some of us make it look easy, But thats mostly from years of expericence and getting the proper qualifications. Best way to get in a plant are to go to the process tech course or go to TSTC. I got hired in as a undergrad because they needed instrument techs bad in 1999. Start out between 18 to 25 hr. Im above 38hr but I earned it by going above and beyond in quals and team leadership. Shift work can be a pain in the *** but I roll on the dupont and enjoy taking weeks off at a time considering im an 11 year vet. Good luck.

The 2 yr school is the best thing I have ever done. Get ready for shift work I like it but some cant handle it. Its not as easy as people think. Your responsible for 100million dollars worth of equip at any given time. Then when **** hits the fan its all hands on deck and it can get bad quick if you dont know what the hell your doing. The pay more than makes up for it. I have been at the plant for 3.5 yrs and last yr I made 110k. This yr ill prob make 130-140k cause im bout to build a house. Just keep putting in resumes and taking test is the only way I know to get in unless you have family in the plant.

So is there any position that pays well with no experience in the field? I know its a long shot but is there anything that would get me more than 15 hr?
I currently work as a Project manager for a small developer and it doesnt look like im going to get a raise any time soon and Ive been here for 5 yrs.

sheeesh - what are you "managing" that you're getting paid slightly higher than someone working at Target lol.
but yes, get into the plant as a helper and you'll make @ $2 or 3 more. work your way up and you'll be seeing $2500 paychecks after a few years

i'm sure there is oil/gas support in San Antonio, but Houston is where it's at.
there's pretty much a plant or an engineering contractor at every major intersection LOL.
contact KBR, Jacobs, CDI, Halliburton, Bechtel, GE, Fluor, WorleyParsons, Mustang, Technip, Aker and S&B.
send in your resume and see what comes back......

I love it when operations talks about contractors as dumb *****. I give it to them some of us are but a lot of us actually know our stuff. And yes I'm trying to get into operations as well but due to bad choices as a teen my chances of getting in are slim but it doesn't stop me from trying. But as a contractor, seeing as how I'm more than likely stuck in this line if work so I'm trying to move on up. Ill be a qc hopefully in the next 2 yrs, that's my plan and will make just as much if not a little more.
But benefits are more than likely a lot better in operations so its really all in perspective
The only thing that really counts is......if you want a good paying career then the plants are the way to go on either side. I make around 80k a year as a fabricator and its slow. If I chose to chase shutdowns instead of maintenance over 100k would be easy.

being a Project Manger at ANY of those companies i listed is a LONG SHOT - like a SERIOUS LONG SHOT.
you'd have to be degree'd and have 15-18 years experience - MINIMUM
those companies i listed are EPC Contractors who provide Engineering, Procurement and Construction services to major oil/chemical companies such as ExxonMobil, DuPont, DOW, Marathon and Chevron, etc......

A very long shot but you might be able to find a supervisor position depending on your experience.
Some more are infinity (that's who I work for), Austin, Wyatt, p2s, there are so many. Most of the offices are in one block in deer park off center. But you are in sa. Even in contract work a req is usually your only way in.
