Default B.S. versus B.A degree

How's it going? I was just wondering if any of you guys knew the differences of the B.A. versus the B.S. degree in General Geology as far as careers go. Currently, I'm doing the B.S. option but I still have to do 3 semesters of calculus, 2 semesters of physics, and 1 more semester of chemistry. If I were to do the B.A. option, I would be done with all of that except for one semester of physics. I have asked many people, including the Dean of my college, and nobody seems to know where the students with the B.A. end up going when they graduate. My goal is to one day work for an oil company. Will the B.A. get me there? Thanks.

Sounds squirrely to me. Sounds like you go to UTA. They don't have a freakin clue what they're doing. I'm going there and they give ppl the run around until you just quit trying to get answers. I'm not sure on your question though.

I have a BS and I'll admit to being full of it too. The reason for my brown eyes!!!!

Honestly, I couldn't tell you the difference. I would think a BS would be more applied science than a BA in the same field. This would be something to ask a councelor or someone in the department.

BS is obviously a bachelor's of science so with that degree plan you take more sciences/maths with a BA its of the arts so you take more languages/arts. if you want to go into the oil business i would imagine the BS would be your best bet especially when dealing with engineers. I'm working on my BA of psychology and sociology, i don't plan on being a psychiatrist therefore i don't need the sciences

B.S, for one I didn't want to learn a foreign language, like you have to do in a B.A also the B.S works out better because you have a more solid base in math. For me I had to take an extra science class and two more math classes, would rather do that.

with the B.A. option, I have to take 4 semesters of a foreign language. The B.S. requires 3 semesters. That's really no problem (I'm in the 2nd semester of sign language and it's easy). If I could somehow skip all the bullshit calculus and still end up with a well paying job, that would be great, but it seems like that wont happen. Is calculus and physics really that important??!?

Our department manager at work summed it up best, lot of the higher level math classes, may never need them again maybe you will, depends on what you do but once you learn them, it teaches you how to approach problems.

yea, thanks for all of the input. I appriciate it. I have considered doing summer school to get some of those tough math classes out of the way. Not too sure though.

Yeah, it's really important. If you go the B.A. route, you'll probably only be qualified to become a schoolteacher (if you add an credential), or a manager, if you add a Master's Degree in Business Admin.

One question is do you have to take more elective classes?

I know that if you take the BA route over BS route most of the time you have to take more electives, even though you don't have to take the math or sciences...... Just something to consider....

i think it also depends on where you go and what major you are because my friend and i are both psych majors but he is BS and i am BA and pretty much the only difference is that i have to take 14 hrs of a language and he has to take like 16 hrs of sciences or something like that

I'm going for a BS in geography (GIS) and I know graduated a couple years ago with a BA in geography and ended up being a lawyer.
