It would also be a good idea to keep a copy of the law in your glove box when traveling just in case your going through a small town and a officer question you on the matter.

Here is the actual law. Please pay special attention Subsection (A), which basically means anything other then a ticket such as DWI, Racing, Reckless driving. Also take note of sectiona (a) (2), It does not cover you leaving your car back to your home unless your are parked on your own premises, like if you live in apartment complex.

Sec. 46.02. UNLAWFUL CARRYING WEAPONS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun, illegal knife, or club if the person is not:
(1) on the person's own premises or premises under the person's control; or
(2) inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's control.(a-1) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun in a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's control at any time in which:
(1) the handgun is in plain view; or
(2) the person is:
(A) engaged in criminal activity, other than a Class C misdemeanor that is a violation of a law or ordinance regulating traffic;
(B) prohibited by law from possessing a firearm; or
(C) a member of a criminal street gang, as defined by Section 71.01.
(a-2) For purposes of this section, "premises" includes real property and a recreational vehicle that is being used as living quarters, regardless of whether that use is temporary or permanent. In this subsection, "recreational vehicle" means a motor vehicle primarily designed as temporary living quarters or a vehicle that contains temporary living quarters and is designed to be towed by a motor vehicle. The term includes a travel trailer, camping trailer, truck camper, motor home, and horse trailer with living quarters.
(b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), an offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor.
(c) An offense under this section is a felony of the third degree if the offense is committed on any premises licensed or issued a permit by this state for the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Althought I believe in the right to carry firearms this has also tied the hands of law enforcement. This is a case I heard about which happen here in Harris County:

Two males were stopped on traffic and found to be wearing body armour. Further investigation found that the each had a gun under their seat as well as ski masks in the vehicle. The passenger was the owner of the vehicle and the driver was of course in control of the vehicle. Since they were pulled over for a class c traffic violation and did not meet the critera of the new law these two males were released. I wonder what they did that night?????

I wonder if that applies to if when you were younger and were a known gang member that was tagged on the list... But from a different state.

I will look into that... I see that you can carry, unless you are tagged as a known gang member. But does that include past tense when you were young and a minor?

CHL class usually costs about $70-$100 bucks, and the state application fee is $140(if I remember right). So, around $250 or less for good piece of mind. Not only do you "feel" a little safer, but you know you're within the law. I've had mine for about 6 months and ,so far, havent had an issue with cops OR criminals. But, from people I talk to, including my instructor, most cops actually appreciate people having CHL's. It shows them that you're most likely a responsible person (assuming you have a fairly clean record) and you care about staying within the law.
BTW, nice site. lots af good topics.

^^^^^ You got it man! Welcome btw.

My question tho is how do y'all transport your ammo? I have my pistol underneath my back seat. Yeah it's not the most accessible place to get to it but I have a son so better safe than sorry. I have it loaded at the moment but I want to unload it and keep the bullets separate from it but how? What should I store them in? I don't want em rolling around in the console or glove compartment. Any suggestions?

DEFINITLEY better safe then sorry. I have a son too. What I do is I ride with a loaded mag in my lap and my pistol in my center console. You can grab your gun and slap the mag in pretty quick. Plus, your ammo is out of the reach of your son.

lol just a random thought bt you could put 3 rounds into the coin holders in the console
or in the tiny bin in front of the shifter
but will be hard to load the gun quickly

i think keeping the bullets in the ash tray is a good idea but then i guess since the gun in underneath the backseat it technically wouldn't be considered "within reach"? Does that even matter?

I would say keep loaded.. at all times.. but with a kid, well the kid in the car should be belted in so he should not be up and around digging thru stuff.

but other then that speed loader is going to be your only bet.
