ive ran an LT1 open headers before and never had a problem with it sucking cold air back in and popping, if the car is steadily pumping out air I dont see how a sufficient amout of air could crawl back in and make a big difference. Ive ran it open headers in heat and cold but still same results, ima get the xpipe put back on but dont think that will cure anything, just make the popping a little less louder lol.

i had a very minor leak at the ypipe and it made my car backfire and miss and lose horsepower. put the x pipe on and let us know

My guess would be a faulty coil or the ignition controller, i say this because i had a 6cyl, i know 2 completely diff cars but just a thought, it would backfire and have problems accelerating and a coil was burnt out caused by a bad ignition control module...hope this helps

Started it up tonight, noticed flames coming out the headers when it popped 3 times. All 3 times there were flames. Sounds like its missing during idle and under load.
wats the best way to test coils?

If you have a 98 engine with 98 coil brackets you might have crossed the coils making them fire the wrong cylinder. The coils are labeled to what cylinder they can fire so check your work and see if that is it!

what i was thinking, not sure if itd be the timing kit itself or computer tuning issue. i think its more than just being open headers. 100k i think the timing kit needs replacing. Might as well throw a cam in there if its true. Anyone else?

Unplug the O2's It'll throw a code and stay in open loop but oh well. Pull your cam and crank sensors and make sure there is no trash on them. If I remember right, they are just hall effect sensors so metal shavings could confuse them.

i understand this but i dont even drive the car so ruining the o2's wont happen. theyll be okay til i get the exhaust on. i dont even drive it. just start it up about 2 times a week to keep it fresh.
