vehicle anti theft system... if you try to start your car. and it wont start/the "security" light comes on. Your VATS is prob fucked. Its not reading the chip in the key.

Did that to me once about a year ago, just let it sit for a few minutes (i think 7) and then go out and start it. If it does not start you need to get the VATS tuned out because it is lots o $$$ to repair it.--Tony

Try cleaning the key and putting it back into the ignition without anything hanging off of it.

you just have to test your key to find the resistance, then put a resistor in line with the appropriate wire. They sell a kit for it but you can DIY

You just take your key to radio shack. use one of their volt meters. read the resistance arcross your key. then find a resistor with close to the same. You will have to buy a pack with about 5-10 resistors, but they are ~$4.
Pull panel under dash. Cut the wires under the dash (i think they are orange) put the resistor on the two wires that go to the bcm. DONE.
takes about 15min at radio shack and about 15 min at your car.

I could do it for you using HP Tuners Pro, $75? Basically a delete tune option. The credits alone will cost me $100 just to authorize your ride. I will be up in Austin, Tx this weekend if anyone else is interested PM me.

tony, ya it did this before a couple months ago, but i figured it was going to get worse this time. Maybe it just does it randomly... The car hasnt moved since I started this thread. We'll see if it wants to work later today.

cantalope kid..
most of the time when someone bypasses vats... its $50 or less. Not really interested in spending more. especially since I was just told how to bypass it. I appreciate the help guys.

Donohue. I am a friend of Phillips. I just had to bypass my VATS a week ago. Works great. If you need any assistance let me know. I had an adjustable resistor put in. It is a really sweet job. I am in Downtown SA though. Let me know.

can someone tell me for sure how I know which wire it is? For the guy that replaced the starter, how did you figure out it was the starter?

What watt rating resistors should I be using? I bought 1/2 watt rated on a guess. So what I gather is the orange sheath with the white wires in it that goes to the connector, I'm planning to disconnect the orange sheathed white wires and in it's place put a 10k ohm 1/2 watt resistor looped each end to the connector. I measured the key at 11k ohm, but I also measured the 10kR at 11k-ohm so pretty sure my meter is cheap...

Anyway what my real question is, is what watt rating should my resistor be? I'm not electrical engineer, and I didn't even stay at a holiday inn express last night, but I was putting some simple math to it and nothing seemed right. Let's say 12v and 1 amp, power would be P=I*E = 12W. My R is 1/2w rated. So hoping the V is way under 12 in this circuit and/or the amperage is way under 1A. Well anyway if someone in the know could reassure me that my 1/2w resistor won't burn down my car it would be much appreciated.
