SES light on. You fail. PERIOD If you have your codes turned off and you have to many not readys. Then you fail also. Ie:for cams, 02 sencers, etc. There are ways to get around it, but you have to find a place that doesn't care. Also if they get caught then there is a big fine sometimes or you lose you inspection lisences or the inspector will get fined.

I like how theres like 7 [claimed] inspectors posting and they are all on different pages lol, it just goes to show you how its a gamble depending on where you go, some places will fail you on visual and you can drive across the street and pass without changing anything.

i have a very friendly inspector (friend of mine), and with the obdII equipment, he was not able to pass it, so i have to get the codes tuned out, then take it up to him for him to pass it

p.s., the reason i am throwing codes is LT's and TD's, no cats, no rear 02's, no EGR, no AIR, lol

I challenge any state inspector to tell me where the stock location of the cats are on every single vehicle sold in the U.S. The argument that a car with cats won't pass because they are not in the stock location is just stupid.

nah, im an ex-state inspector, and i had most of the book memorized. you just had to have cats, and emission systems (most ppl cant tell though if your egr is missing or your a.i.r.), and no codes, and no more than 3 not readys in your computer. you had to have a muffler, but the book says nothing about cams, and headers are legal as long as you still have a cat (2 cats if the guys a dick, cause technically you have to have the same number of cats as originally came on it from the factory). i forget what it says about nitrous, but its you cant fail it just cause its there, even if it is hooked up, if i remember correctly. i actually think it doesn't even mention it in the book. but yeah

I took my car to a muffler shop to have high flow cats installed on a friday some time ago and they wouldn't do it. I was told come back Sat. because the state inspecters(people who regulate the muffler shops) would not be checking the shop for illegal swaps(being the weekend)ie... moding the stock cats.

The cat law cited is nice to know but what does it really have to do with getting an inspection? It seems to be an inspector's job to verify that the equipment is there, as written in their inspection guides. Inspector opens the book and line by line goes over the car, sees the mufflers--check, sees the cat(s)--check, car brakes work--check, horn--check, ect..... mmmmm meets all the requirements, it passes. If the exhaust leaks, horn doesn't work, brakes fail to operate, then it fails.

Who's job is it to enforce the laws? The police, right? So if you get pulled over and an officer sees that you have altered exhaust, he could say here's your ticket.

That is how I see the situation but I see others think that the inspectors are supposed to know all the laws and by-laws that have been written regarding motor vehicles and its equipment. That however, probably isn't the case.
