Default Gmc Sierra " Battery not charging" Warning

This is on a 2003 Gmc sierra with a 5.3l. I replaced the battery about a year ago. Two days ago I noticed the voltage gauge would drop when coming to a stop. While driving it would stay around 13.5volts. I checked the alternator with a voltmeter and it was putting out 13.6 and would drop down to 12.6 with all the acessories on. I replaced the alternator with an ac delco unit yesterday. Now I am getting a battery light that will come on with the battery not charging message. It comes on stay on for 5 seconds or so then goes off for 5 seconds. The voltage gauge stays at 14 all the time and I have driven the truck about 30 miles no other problems. The alternator is fine, what could be causing this problem? Thanks for any help, Josh

go to advance auto parts and have them hook up there battery machine. it will tell you if there's a problem with the new alternator or the battery, if both come up good you know it's a fuse or wiring somewhere

I hooked a meter up to the battery and I am getting 13.9 volts so I am sure that the alternator is putting out the correct voltage.

yeah, but still. the tester they have tells you more about it then just a voltometer. as long as your not dealing with a total dumbass there you can get a good idea.

I almost think that the ecu or instrument cluster has a problem. Please someone that has gone through this problem chime in. Thanks

na didn't take it like that. problem may be different then what i think. but sometimes they can say they are making the power but it might not actually be putting it in due to a bad battery and lots of other little things. i just like the machine because it tells ALL the details on both battery and Alt.

have you checked fuseable link between the batt. and alt. also sound like your battery is not getting a correct connection and its breaking down.

put a batt. tester on it and see if it breaks down under load, could have a weak cell. good luck

Where is the fusible link at? Is it in the wire?

Check the little wire on the alt that goes to the dash. It is I beleive called the exciteor wire, If it does not have the correct voltage the alternator will not charge.

Thig is a very comon problem on the turbo buick/ Grand national and other GMs.

Try that first.

Could easily be a problem with the cables. You might want to go ahead and replace them.

Nope, battery has 14.2 volts while running. Not going to start throwing parts at it. I think its some type of small electrical issue causing the warning light to come on.

There isnt one single wire going to the cluster for battery light. It is class 2 serial data.

Sorry I looked at mine and your right! the wire I'm talking about is the single wire that plugs into the top of the alt. w/ a weatherpack connector. If the alt. does not get a signal from that wire to excite the alt. It wont Charge.
