Default What kind of job will this degree get me?

I'm currently a 3rd year Mechanical and Energy Engineering student at UNT. I know there is a lot of engineers on here. Just wondering what kind of jobs I could possibly get out of college with this degree. I would really like to get into solar energy. Anybody else think that solar will play a major role in our energy consumption in the next 25 to 50 years?

Major? Probably not. Bigger? most probably.

Check out nuclear energy. 4 new plants are being docketed in Texas alone. The industry has been stagnant for 20 years and therefore the workforce has dwindled significantly.

Lots of opportunities for engineers.

Fluor has many projects coming up within energy. We will always be looking for sharp young professionals to join our organization.

I used to be mechanical engineering major, decided I was better with computers than math so I changed majors to Computer Information Systems. I'm glad I did, as I found what my real passion is; games. I now am an intern at a small game studio here in Amarillo.

There's always a huge demand for engineers though.

you could probably get into all sorts of fields with that degree. I would get into the oil and gas industry if I were you. It will may MUCH better than solar IMO.

Pick solar if you want little job security, questionable future, weak demand, and weak pay, but a warm fuzzy feeling in the back of your mind because you think it fixes the world.

In Texas, Oil and Gas has the highest demand and highest pay right now. There are also wind energy companies as well. I expect things to be slightly more optimistic with wind than solar at the current time.

what kind of things are drivers in your decision process? money? job security? location? travel? tree hugger type stuff?

what is important to you that is influencing the decision?

IMO its a no brainer, go with oil & gas, but thats just me.

Onshore. Mostly working on the "Shale" in the Ark-La-Tx right now.

Yes, there is definately something going on there. Our clients don't disclose much to the public, but drilling has commenced. I've got crews all over the place out there.

One of our major clients is about to loose his *** though...

We'll just say that Shell isn't going out of business. Between this "new" area and Alaska, they're not going anywhere.

money, job security, location is not that big of a deal to me, but i really wouldnt like to travel a whole lot. a couple of times a year would be cool, but not all the time. I have thought about the oil and gas industry, but im afraid of it not being around for my entire workforce career.
