i would stay away from those.. look at the cfm ratings, those would never keep up with a die grinder, air saw, paint gun.

look up curtis compressors.. they are high but worth every dollar.

Really, you need to define "Automotive".

Impact tools, inflating tires, air ratchet, blow gun, etc... for light usage (one guy wrenching on a car), they'd be fine. I ran a low end compressor for years until I outgrew it (painting, DA sanding, etc - those little ones won't keep up). The low end one did fine for me, and now I have my 'big' one, and sold the little one.

They are likely the exact same compressor. Wait for it to go on sale at HF, and then use a 15% off coupon to get an even better discount. Patience pays off when shopping at HF. I'd bet it'd go on sale for $179 at HF, and then with 15% off from there, you'd be looking at about $150. Not bad.

I like oil lubricated compressors, not oilless (those are oil lubricated). That part is good.

HF sells the exact same one as the northern tool one your looking at. The HF one you posted is 220v. I have the 120V HF model. It's 5 years old and I use it a good deal. For the money it was well worth it.

You could even look at the craftsman compressors. I've used a 30 gallon upright for 6 or 7 years now and it's been fine. I stepped up to a 60 gallon, 2 stage because I needed a quieter setup and wanted the bigger storage that the 60 gallon offers.

Looking at that compressor, it looks like a good deal.

I just picked up a 2-stage, 60 gallon Craftsman from the mid 90s that was in excellant condition. It needed the head retorqued, and the manifold needed to have the threads re-sealed, but other than that, it was perfect. It will cycle from 125psi up to 175psi in about 2 minutes, and even using a grinder, it will still cycle on/off while working unlike my old 30 gallon craftsman that couldn't maintain the 90psi while I was working. Granted, that only delivered ~6cfm at 90psi, and my new one will deliver 12cfm at 100psi.

i have the 220V version of the one pictures above and it is only good for light duty plus its noisy. if you got just a little more change to spend check this one out. very reasonable for the cfm.
