i tried it once and did not work for me. i would buy prebent pipe if you can. i have made jigs out of plastic electrical conduit and fitted them in for roll cages before. once i had them fitted i made the new one out of steel. works good if you have multiple bends

haha.
To the OP yes sand will work, make sure its wet theo. also bend it slowly over a period of time. Too much stress at once is like coming home after a long day of work & your gf telling you shes pregnant, it never ends up good. lol

NO!!! You want to be sure that it's as DRY as you can make it!! Hell, throw the sand in a kiln or an oven before using it!! Pipe-bending with sand requires that you heat the pipe - and if the sand is WET, then you've just created steam (and PRESSURE) in the pipe, and that generally isn't a story that ends well...
In all honesty, the others who posted something to the effect of
just buy prebent pipe and cut it apart and make the bends you need
(And yes, I know that this is a very old thread - I wouldn't have revived it except I didn't want someone following idiotic, dangerous advice & potentially getting seriously hurt or killed...)

have the right idea. Trying to bend a pipe using sand doesn't make sense unless you want the bragging rights of having done that...
