I don't have a 9x20, but I do have a 7x12 and a Shoptask 3 in 1. The lathe portion on that is 17x32. I'm assuming you're considering a Harbor Freight, a Grizzly or something similar. They are capable of doing acceptable work with some tweaking. Most, if not all of them seem to have way too much backlash out of the box, but can be adjusted to perform satisfactorally. I did quite a bit of research before I pulled the trigger on mine and that seems to be the general consensus with all of the Chinese machine tools. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get mine set up completely yet due to a serious injury I sustained. This is what I've got.

I have one of these small Atlas/Craftsman lathes ... nice little hobby unit.
I don't actually know it's official dimensions but it does have thread chasing capabilities and it's currently for sale.

If it needs to go through the head stock your looking at lathe with a 2.032 hole which is a good size piece of equipment , and not cheap.

It seems that lathe is a foreign built most likely Chinese lathe, I would look into finding a decent South Bend lathe. At one time most schools had dozens of them for the machine shop class. They may be a bit more rare now, but they can take the abuse of students for 40 years and still work great.
I really prefer older american built lathes, Monarch is a brand I like along with South Bend. I've cut threads, tapers, knurls, boring, and taping on the lathe. There is something awesome about taping on a lathe.
