Default Electric garage heaters?

Are they any good? I'm looking at a 10,000 watt one, that hangs from the roof.. Is this going to be enough to heat a 24 x 34 insulated and drywalled garage?

Default It Won't Work

Electric heaters are way too expensive to operate, especially in Michigan. A 10kw heater won't even take the chill off a building that size in the winter. I had a 10kw unit in a 1.5 car garage and it took about 2 hours to warm the place up. The electric bill was outrageous.

Do you have gas or propane available? I have several good used furnaces if you are looking for one. What part of Michigan are you in?

I have propane on the house.. So that is an option. PM me your info on what you have, and a contact #. I'm up near Flint.

WOOD OR PELLET STOVES ARE AMAZING! even better if you can run some sort of ducting to disperse the heat more.

build you own used oil burning heater... have used one for years to heat a 40x60 shop... i live in nebraska and we have cold winters.

the best part is that they are cheap... almost free to make... and you gan get used oil for free!

a 55gal drum will last for 1-2 weeks heating 24/7!!!!

i love waste oil furnaces, im probably going to rig one up when i get my own garage.
id get a propane unit heater if you didnt wanna deal with oil. dont bother with electric, slow recovery and it'll kill your wallet to get that little bit of heat. the only time electric is acceptable to me is if you have free electricity or live in a climate that doesnt get cold.

Kerosene torpedo heater....Best 200 I ever spent. I have a 75k BTU one, I leave a window WIDE open to vent and it heats my oversized 3 car from 45 to 75* in less than an hour.

These heaters are the cats ***. This will bring my garage from 0 degrees F. up to 65 degrees F. in 30 minutes. They run on propane or natural gas. I can heat it for two months on $65. I leave it at 40 degrees when im not in the garage. Just cold enough so the beer stays cold.

i got a 55k kerosene torpedo, it works on my 24x30 garage with NO insulation. i usually start it about 20 minutes before I go out there and its always warm enough in the garage for me to work in just a tshirt and jeans. even last week when it was 10 degrees out. I run it on diesel i buy from the local gas station. 5 gallons will usually last me about 10-12 hours of run time. bought it for $100 bucks off craigslist and it came with a thermostat too. on the weekends i usually fill it up on friday afternoon, set it to 40 degrees and leave it, then just turn it up when im in there working on the car. usually lasts all thru sunday afternoon

I ended up getting a propane torpedo, and a big tank. It heats up quick. This will get me by for now, and may switch to wood down the road.

I have a small wood burning stove plumbed in as well as a 55,000btu torpedo heater. I mainly use the torpedo heater since I'm too lazy to keep the fire going!
