We've got 2 of those type starrett bore gauges at the shop i work at. There pretty good, they don't hold up to well though. Should be fine for checking cylinder bores, just don't drop it.

Check out "standard" brand bore gauges, they're problably cheaper, more durable, and just as accurate. They're easy to repair also.
