custom chassis work? ?'s
So about 6months ago i purchased a miller D165 to build a turbo kit for a friend and do custom turbo setups in the future, well i completed my friends car and decided i need more toys so i can further my fab skills... I wanna do a custom bumper/ rad support on my 4gen camaro and do it in chromoly tube, and eventually do the cage in my car
only problrm is i dont have much experience in chassis work or which tools to buy..
I was looking at a manual tube bender (jd2 model 32) spoke to an online store ( van sant) which seemed very helpful.. Wut else should i be shoping for, a tube notcher? Or could i be succesful with an angle grinder, does snyone have any suggestions for me on how to approach this.. Also how do i make sure the cage will be approved

tube notcher is nice but not totally essential.
as for certification, just buy the SFI specs for the cage you want to build and follow them carefully for tube placement and size and you will be fine.
i mean c'mon have you seen some of the crap cage work people are running?
when TIG welding chromium-molybdenum tubing always use either er70s or 316L stainless filler material(i prefer the stainless because that is what the military uses for chromium-molybdenum, as it adds another alloy to the mix)
any other questions just post them up or you can PM me

im not gonna argue but ive used stainless filler on about 10 complete chassis that ive built. 2 of which were Pro Modifieds that smacked the wall at 200 plus MPH and chromoly tubing was being ripped apart and my weak stainless welds still X-rayed perfect

ya I have a chop saw already, so i guess ill be picking up that bender soon.. and not sure if any of you guys have experience in this but i wanna make supports for my bumper and headlights and stuff using some smaller tube, ive seen it done on here before but not really sure where to start to make sure everything is lined up perfectly and 1 would think some 5/16's tubing would be sufficient for this

The aircraft industry, which has been welding 4130 alot longer than any race car builder deems it unsafe. Im glad no one got hurt, now you should try to keep it that way by not reccomending any further use... It has nothing to do with not fusing properly, it will, but the alloy of stainless is not what you want in the joint.....
besides 316L is 18% chromium and 15% molybdenum it just has nickel at 13% where 4130 is comprised of mostly chromium and no nickel
