Default Craftsmutt - new 175 lb compressor

So I saw this unit for $385 in the new catalog after I bought a differnt unit (5HP, 150 lbs)...

anyway it is an oil-less unit - 7HP and 60 gallons with a maximum pressure of 175 lpbs...!!!! It runs on 120 volt household current too....!

sounds kinda cheap, im not a big fan of single phase motors with more than 5hp. most of the compressors i work on have 3phase 5-10 hp motors on the small ones. get one with oil, and belt drive, they last forever in a private shop.

A few years ago I bought a 6.5 hp 80 ga. oil-less compressor. It's worked fine for me, but I would never buy another oil-less if I could possibly affford something better. Oil-less compressors are VERY noisy, and a 6 hp oil-less performs about like a 3 hp traditional style compressor. Did I mention that they're noisy

The oil-less compressors have a plastic piston that casues much of the noise....when the unit goes south you toss it on the garbage heap and go over to Sears and buy a new compressor...

This technology seems to be taking over with many new products....for example, fewer engines and transmissions are being rebuilt these days,,,,if they go bad, just buy a new one....weird thinking but apparently, it is the wave of the future...

robert however true all that is about building things better. they have the ability and knowledge to build way better parts that will last almost forever, but they build in weak parts on purpose otherwise they wouldnt make money on selling new ones. for instance they have a lightbulb that last forever but they will never sell it, humm wonder why

In reality it is imposible to draw more than about 4hp out of a single regular 120 volt socket. 120 volt * 20amp(max normal house plug) = 2400 watt. 500 watt is 1/2 hp. So with losses and such max of about 4 hp I would say. 5, 6, 7...no way, unless you are using a big 30 amp twist lock plug. But even then I dont think they can get that much power from single phase motors.

Anything direct drive is not gonna be the HP they say it is. Most are probably closer to 1.5-2 and even that may be stretching it.

Only true good way to rate a compressor is by air output. X CFM at Y Pressure. If anyone wants to have a Compressor shootout, I have a tool for measuring this

Whoever said to go with a belt drive setup with a REAL motor is definitely on the right track. Its the only way to go if you want it to last. The direct drive ones will work ok for very small jobs, but lots of use and they wont be around long. And then its time to toss them out. If a belt drive goes out you can replace or even rebuild the compressor...or replace the motor. But in a home garage it will last a lifetime with proper maintenance.

I have the Craftsman "Professional" 6hp 25gal 110v compressor (oil and belt type) and it has worked great with anything I've thrown at it. You will find that the quality of the air tools themselves seem to be more important than the compressor driving them. Good tools work much better than cheap ones.

That's the one I replaced my oil less Craftsman with and it's much quieter. A good home compressor.
