Welding observations from a novice
flux core can make a pretty nice weld. especially useful for utility type stuff, trailer hitches, trailers, quick repairs on poorly prepped materials. it burns in very hot. .030 flux core in a 110v welder can make some good stuff happen quickly.
i'm not sure I've ever heard of someone using dual shield in an automotive application. I used it exclusively when i was shipbuilding. straight co2 gas, not too smoky and penetrates like a ************

A good Hobart mig flux core gas welder is way more versatile
than a tig welder, especially for out of position welding and repairs under a car, tig is awesome for bench welding though.

Self shielding is straight garbage there is no two ways about it.
Gas shielding if you read my post could be used for a 2x3 frame, welding a boxed front cross member onto your frame besides that not much more. If you have a hard time making Gas shielded flux core look nice your doing something wrong. If you want to argue that self shielded fluxcore isnt garbage and has more purpose and is more suitable building a car I invite you to build your cage, hotside, coldside, fuel cell, tube chassis with it please post pics after you do so I look forward to seeing them.

I'm a novice as well and getting better with just gas buy if flux core and gas is the thing I want to give it a try and see.
I have a hot side to build (gonna be wrapped after) starting with building a log and would like to make it good and strong the first time!
Hobart 140 handler here, also have a Lincoln 225 ( like from 1978) but don't have enough talent for that yet!

The topic was about welders and what to buy. I am a pressure welder for a living for oil and gas pipeline, not that it matters but just so you know i'm not some backyard welder chiming in. If your happy putting your stuff together with self shielding wire that's cool, i'm happy if your happy. On the other hand if someone were to ask me whats the best most suited welder for working on their car is, I wouldn't suggest a wire feed machine with self shielded wire. There's a reason top notch cars are all tig'd together its not coincidence.

Not everyone has $500+ to plunk down on a new welder. I was fortunate enough to find my Lincoln on Craigslist for $125 practically new. It has paid for itself a thousand times over.
Thanks for the compliment. I got the El Camino running and tagged right before the weather turned south.
I wasn't saying fluxcore is better than TIG. I was simply saying that it isn't garbage and you can build cars with it. Plenty of people have.
