gauge welding where you want more
penetration I'd say go with a heavier gauge
flux cored wire with no gas. Whatever is the
biggest your pinch roller and cable feed will
pass.
Why not just mig weld your joints since your welder is set up for it. Even though your welding setup is mean for thinner materials, it should go up to 1/8 inch. If your material is thicker, then just pre-heat the area before you weld.
The main advantage of stick (smaw) welding is in windy areas. It can produce more porosity as well as additional splatter.
