I would try Harbor Freight. They have some good prices on welders.

Let me know if you can find a tig welder for $500. The lowest I have seen a tig welder that only does steel at 150 amps, air cooled which was $700.

If you are going to weld up a cage then I suggest at least 175 amp welder. As far as brand they are all good miller, lincoln, ESAB. These name brands will be much easier to find parts.

For a tig I dont think you are going to find much for 500.00, I wouldnt skimp on the welder if you are planning on welding in a cage with it, someone's life depends on it

Is the cage for the inside of your F-body or for fishing the great whites?

..just curious!

GOOD LUCK! for $500 Add a zero to that figure

I think I am going to have close to $5,000 in the set up and schooling I am going to buy. I know that the Dynasty isn't the cheapest unit out there but if you are going to invest in a welder I wanted something that I knew had the features I could grow into without having to purchace a another new machine in 6 months or a year.

Miller Dynasty 200DX- $2400
Miller Cool Mate 3 water cooler- $460
Cooler hose- don't remember
3 gallon of coolant- $60
Esab Torch- Free
Tungsten Electordes- ?
Tungsten grinder- $250 or dedicated bench grinder
Torch Adaptors- $50
Foot Pedal- $160 or Hand control
Bottle of Argon- Don't rember Maybe $300
Regulator- $70
Gas hose- included in above price
Adjustabe, auto dim welding helmet for TIG (My old auto dim wasn't adjustable)- $220
Welding classes @ local Ivy Tech community college- $500 for two classes
Welding textbooks for class- $85
+ tax and shipping You do the math

Smokinhawk,

You are correct.

MIG is legal for mild steel only, TIG is legal for mild steel and chromoly (NHRA)

But he asked about a TIG welder, not a MIG welder.
