The "good" machinist jobs around here are in the mid-upper $20 range.

Big Bucks are in Grinding, Carbide, EDM and Engraving. You can make great money with anything of high tolerance.

Depends where you live. Here in the Silicon Valley they can make quite a bit. Its all over the board. I own 2 lasers that run every day but rich Im not. Guys I know down the street who are CNC programmers are at about 28 hr. Know another shop nearby with manual machines that are half of that pay rate.

i'd say alot of the pay scale is the location.someone in a big city that has a higher cost of living will probably be making more than someone out in bfe with a lower cost of living.i'm a cnc machinist in bfe by the way.

Is a tech degree necessary? I have buddies that just learned a small shop, moved to a bigger shop, and are making some good money (overtime is normal too!)

I heard there's beginning to be a turn over in the industry where most of the new "button pushers" (CNC guys) don't even know how to run manual machines anymore. My father and younger brother are both machinists, I just couldn't stand still for that long.
