Default Fabbing a camera mount

Howdy guys,

I'm thinking about fabbing up a mount for a camera. I want to create a piece of sheet metal that will bolt to the floor of the car on the hump behind the back seats. I figure I will fasten it to the car with some sheet metal screws, but I'm concerned about how much distance there is between the floor of the car and the top of the gas tank. Is there enough room for a small sheet metal screw? Maybe 3/4"?

Thanks in advance!

Anyone? I am just curious what kind of clearance there is between the bottom of the car and the top of the gas tank at this point.

no, there is very, very little room. even if you are very, very careful with the drill, and do not hit the gas tank (which is only 1/2" to 3/4" underneath) you run the risk of the plastic gas tank hitting the point of your screw while driving, and punturing it.

Why not make something that uses the exisiting tie down bolts on the back ? Other then that, if you insit on drilling, and are extremely careful (get a guard on your drill to prevent more then 1/4" penetration), I'd use pop-rivets instead of sheet metal screws.

I'd like to be able to remove it, so I'd rather not use the rivets. However, the tie down bolts are a very interesting suggestion. I may do that instead. Thanks for the advice!

yeah, I'd go with the tie down bolts. Just use some 1/4" x 1" steel bar to bo across them, bolt it down on each end, and fab your camera mount in the middle of the bar.
