OMG!!!!!! THANK YOU BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s. now that dial guage is between the ring and what else? Exactly how will i be able to measure the backlash with the gauge? Just put it in betweeN?

The dial guage is held in the magnetic base...which you place on the diff housing, move the adjusters on it till the needle on the dial guage is against a tooth on the ring gear. Move the carrier up till a tooth/teeth is against the pinion teeth, move it back till it does it again on the coast side of the gears and the movement between is the backlash. Its somewhat hard to explain, but once you get to doing it, it makes a lot more sense.

'lash/backlash' is the amount/dimension(in thousandths of an inch) of play/free movement of the ring gear while you're rotating it(in either direction) by hand. This free movement occurs when it leaves contact of a pinion tooth and arrives at contact with another pinion tooth.
Proper lash/backlash can only be determined/set after correct pinion depth has been achieved.

you would use gear marking compound to find the pinion depth correct. Would you want about the same distance on both sides between the contact patch and the edge of the tooth correct? Where can i get some gear marking compound i cant find anybody anywhere that carries it.
