Default media blasters

Hey guys I'm cleaning up my charger for some body work while the engine and trans are out.

I'm looking to buy a media/sand blaster for my engine bay and under carriage.

I don’t know anything about this stuff. is this the type of thing I’m looking for, even if its not ideal will it work for blasting big parts and larger areas?

If anyone wants to give me some pointers or post some links to a better blaster please fill me in.

I guess it depends on how much you'll use the blaster after your done with your project.. I thought about buying one for my 70 Camaro but by the time I bought the unit and media it was only a little less than taking it somewhere and having it done..plus no mess..

I'm also interested in one. I'd do most of my work outside... I'm not worried so much about mess. I just want power. I like the idea of a portable one, a cabinets size is limited but you can recycle media... The one posted above seems light duty.

All you need is compressed air if I'm not mistaken, and of course don't forget the actual media.

Thanks, I would have felt pretty stupid if I had forgotten that ...

I've used the tank/Pot type sand blasters you have pictured before and they are far from Light duty for the average guy unless you are blasting the whole car at that point take it and have it blasted by someone who specializes in doing clasic cars etc... If you can't find some one and you need to do that let me know I can get you some names and number of people in the Houston area that use the wallnut shells baking soda and other forms of media blasting. Not sure where you are located.

I have a Clemco sand blasting unit, It was well worth the extra money! Just like anything else, you get what you pay for. You need the unit, media, a big *** compressor (We use an ingersoll construction tow type), and most important, the sand blasting suit.

The setup in the ebay pic is pretty nice. But you need a BIG *** compressor!! I have a small sand blaster (like what would be in a little sand blasting cabinet) and it works fine for small parts...but even it strains my compressor (and it's a big compressor). I rented one when I did my engine bay and under carriage. It used a pot like in that pic but had a turbine compressor powered by a 4cyl diesel engine. Worked great, but made a hell of a mess and used a TON of media.

One tip about soda blasting.
It needs to be washed down with water.
Kinda defeats the whole process but you can wipe
with metal prep after.
If you buy one of the 40 or 80lb pots and make a "container"
out of 6 mil poly sheeting you can contain most of it and recycle.
Be sure and sift the recycled stuff with some screen.
