Tacking aluminum with Mig
Depends on the thickness of the material as well as the amperage range oh the machine. If I have to tack something using a TIG I clamp a piece of angle or flay steel behind it and it works ok I would think it would also work with a decent mig
The problem you run into using wire to tack aluminum is the lack of heat. You need to have a pool for a few seconds to get any heat out of it. Just depends on how strong you need it to be.

Just tape it.......it'll be too much of a hassle with a MIG. I just sold my spool gun, even with that a MIG on alum. is very finicky and if it's not perfectly clean you'll just blow a hole in it (assuming your wire doesn't ball up on you first). Either way I think you'll just end up with a mess on your hands.

I usually tape mine and pull 2" back and tack. Once I get the inital tack done I'll remove the tape to make sure the fitment is still dead nuts. Before you tack, make sure its been Stainless brushed, acetone'd and ready to go.
