You should get a bigger charge card!

Flea markets, yard sales and pawn shops rule for
building up your tool collection, probably half
of my hand-tool stuff is used. Just have to look
it over for damage. I have flea market Craftsman
ratchets that have stood up to sledge hammer
abuse for 20 years (poor man's impact wrench) and
if I ever break 'em I'll get a free one.

I found a nice drawer tool chest by the side of
the road yesterday, only missing one drawer and
rusty as hell but I needed another (6th) one.

There's always room for pie!

I like Craftsman tools. They aren't as awesome as Snap-On brand, but they work well for their price. They are also guaranteed for life, and are relatively easy to locate since there are Sears stores everywhere. If you ever bust, strip, or bend a Craftsman hand tool you simply take it back to Sears and they replace it with a new one. I've done this many times without any hassles.

Of course, they look at you kind of funny when you bring in a screwdriver with a chewed up tip and a bent shaft. lol

Start with a good craftsman 150 piece set (or what ever is in the budget) and build from there....

Almost every week, the Sears flyer lists a 160 piece set with case (plastic), including 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" ratchets. With this they have all kinds of sockets, deep, six pt, with extensions, metric and English, and all kinds of good stuff. It's a real bargain at $139.00! And, as was stated many times, if they break, you get a replacement!!

Snap on is $$$. Go Craftsman. If you ever break it, just take it back and they will give you a new one. Just don't tell them you put a 3" pipe on the wrench to break a bolt loose (done that a few times....).

craftsman is awsome + if you break anything just take it back and poof you get a new one, but as for tools buy a compressor and air tools they are a life saver

for instance cam install
by hand like 6-8hrs
with air tools some say 2-3hrs

Air tools aren't cheap, you will first need to buy an air compressor. The cheapest compressors that are somewhat usable for working on cars are around $250-300. Then you will need all the air ratchets and socket guns, about $50-150 each, then the sockets themselves.

I love my Snap On tools. I just started to build a set. Craftsmen do not even compare, but for those on a budget craftsmen work. Snap On tools also usually are a good investment. If you keep them for a few years you can usually sell most the tools for what you paid or more in most cases.

I have over $150,000.00 worth of tools. Most of them are MAC.I guess that beauty of owning a tool buisness.
For your average do it yourselfer craftsman will do just fine. However in a shop enviroment the simple won't last as long. You might also look into S&K as the are on par maybe a little more than craftsman and a lot better quality.
Good luck

H82BBad, you own a tool business? What brand(s) do you sell? Maybe we can get some tool sponsors for this section

I've heard somewhere that Husky and Craftsman are actually made by the same company. I don't remember the reference. Does HD offer free replacement if the tool is broken? If they do, then you can go with Husky. They seemed like nice tools when I looked at them. If you're planning on working on newer cars just start off with the metric set. You will rarely need standard tools. I only have metric tools and keep all my toys running.

Sears always has good deals on craftsman tools it's what i use and they hold up just fine and if you break it they replace it no problem. For 200 bucks you can get a good sized tool set that is in a hard plastic case. It's what I have and it is almost all you need.

Craftsman is the pimp $hit... I love snap-on... but craftsman fits my budget and are guaranteed for life... no questions asked... no matter how mangled the socket looks... hehehe

My biggest gripe with Craftsman tools is the ratchets.. I seem to wear them out within a couple months of owning 'em.. Sure, they replace them without question every time I bring 'em back, and it's convenient -- Sears Hardware is just down the road... BUT ... I wouldn't mind forgoing the frustration of an ailing ratchet when I'm actually working on something. Who knows, if I ever come across some good deals on a MAC or Snap-On ratchet set, I just might splurge
