I just have a set of blue point digital calipers The work great.. It just depends on what your doing and how much you want to spend if you want minimum cost and Max accuracy then get a set of verneer calipers... you just have to learn how to read them..

.

Been using old dial style forever. Too cheap to get new ones, besides I actually know how to use these.
No battery to die on a Sun night.

Mitutuyo or Starrett

We only carry these two brands because they're damn good and consistent.

Not cheap.

I've had the cheapest 6" Mitutoyo for almost 20 years. I replaced my dial caliper when I dropped it and broke the crystal and the needle. Needless to say, in that amount of time, I've dropped the digital more than once.

for most people the HF cheapie will do just fine. they are, surprisingly, fairly accurate. I like the actual dial myself, learn with one of those and then neither style is a problem if you ever run into it at the machinists shop, etc. My high dollar one is a blue-point and in all honesty, ive compared it with the HF cheapie for accuracy and both are more than close enough for setting up engine clearances. and they do look remarkably similair- a friend of mine has an O-Reilly and it matches my HF unit perfectly.

I dont know if all metering dials and mechanisms are created equal, Im sure thats not the case. whatever you choose to buy, before you buy it, take it and measure for looseness in the calipers. bring a set of feeler gauges to the store. measure the thickness of the gauge with the tips of the calipers, and then move the gauge down into the base of the caliper jaws and measure again. compare the results; if you have any difference in measurements then the caliper jaws/mechanism is deflecting when pressure is applied. I went through two of em at HF and my third was built a little tighter.

Oh believe me, I hear what you're saying. I buy from the local Snap on dealer when the Sears/Craftsman tools would probably wok just fine... but I get better service from Snap on and I don't have to drive 30 minutes to Sears.

if your doing a lot of engine work or using one a lot buy a good one im a machinist and i have a mitutoyo dial and electronic and a brown and sharpe dial. the brown and sharpes are my favorite because oof its smooth movement and the only downfall to the mitutoyo is the brown and sharpe doesnt have the thumb dial like the mitutoyo does. and if anyone happens to want theres calibrated my shop does it i can do it for free if you just mail them to me or any other measuring equipment just pm me or something. tony

12" mitutoyo dial that I got on ebay for $75. They were broken, but the shop I was working for at the time repaired their machinists' tools for free
