88 Mazda Rx-7 GTU LS6/T56
I searched long and hard for a clean body to swap an LS1 into. I’m a huge fan of the 2nd generation RX-7s and my favorite is the 88 GTU. The only year for this model it's the perfect light-weight beast!
I found the perfect RX-7 from an older guy up in Ohio. He purchased the low mileage, GTU from the owner of a Mazda Dealership and the guy kept it stored in his garage with a bed sheet covering it. Never has it been in snow and it was correctly stored every winter. Fluids changed when it went into storage and fluids changed when it came out. The RX-7 had about 20 miles of drive time on it since storage when I went to pick it up. It was beautiful and near flawless in every way with 76k extremely well cared for miles. Everything worked well with the exception of the power antenna.
I drove the RX-7 in stock form for about a month and then I began disassembling it for the swap. It broke my heart to pull out the perfectly running rotary motor, but by now I was very confident in the rear end, brakes and suspension and I knew the swap would be well worth it in this GTU.
I ordered a LS1 full pull-out with a few extras, (engine, transmission, pcm, wiring harness, fans, shifter assembly and aluminum driveshaft) from Cleveland-Pick-A-Part. It came out of a 2002 SS with 28k miles. I have all the records showing compression #s, vacuum, CO check, etc…I also have video of the engine running in the Camaro. The stats on the engine are as follows:
Compression was 200/190: 1-200 2-195 3-195 4-190 5-190 6-195 7-200 8-200
Oil pressure was 55lbs cold and 45lbs warm
Vacuum was 20"
CO Check: PASS
The Block # is 12561168, (LS6 block)
The RX-7 was LS1 powered the 1st week of July 2006! I drove it through the summer/fall with no issues. Over the winter I wanted to do a few things to the RX-7, so I pulled the swap. It now has upgraded heads, cam, pushrods, rocker arms, injectors, pulley, flywheel, throttle body, exhaust manifolds, brakes and suspension, detailed below.
Chassis Details: 88 GTU, Arctic Silver Metallic, blue interior, 4 piston front/rear brakes, 7” 4.10 LSD, power mirrors, power roof, manual steering, manual windows, manual locks, no cruise, no rear wiper, (had cold air conditioning, but not since the swap) aluminum hood, rear defrost, full aero package in excellent condition.
Front nose has a few chips. No dents, or dings and absolutely no rust anywhere. 1 small scratch on the passenger front fender and I blew a spot of paint off the passenger mirror with a commercial power washer, but it’s smaller than a dime. The paint is beautiful.
The interior is amazing as well. No rips or tears and the seats have excellent form. This RX-7 is strictly beautiful.
Brake/Suspension Upgrades: Hawk HPS brake pads on freshly turned rotors with Mazdatrix Stainless Steel brake lines, KYB AGX adjustable shocks with Racing Beat springs, Suspension Techniques front and rear sway bars. Full Energy Suspension poly bushing kit installed. MMR rear subframe and differential bushings. MazdaTrix Delrin DTSS, (rear steer)eliminators. Included is a very clean set of OEM TII wheels with BF Goodrich GForce 205/225tires.
Swap Details: A true LS6 through and through plus some! I purchased a brand new set of CNC Ported LS6 heads through Patriot Performance, with upgraded internals. These are actual 243 stamped LS6 heads. I also purchased a COMP XER Series Cam, 232/232 595/595 110LSA. Comp hardened pushrods and Harland Sharp worked their magic with the rocker arms. I upgraded to a LS2 timing chain and shimmed the oil pump for higher pressure. I installed a Fidanza 10# aluminum flywheel and PowerBond under-drive pulley. I have 36# Lucas injectors installed with a Walbro 255 fuel pump. Ported and polished throttle body with knife edged blade. Ported manifolds, 2.5 dual exhaust running through an x-pipe and two 12” Borla XR1s. This is no quiet, tame Rx-7.
This RX-7 has always been well cared for in stock as well as V8 form. I’ve taken exceptional care of the car. It has a very safe tune with the rev limiter set at 6600 and my shift light set at 6400. I’ve not broken anything on this set-up which is a testimony to how I drive. Mobil-1 in the engine and transmission with Amsoil in the rear.
Asking $17k, but more interested in trading for a vehicle that's just as nice and well sorted as mine. Muscle car, bike, diesel truck, family sedan.
Thank You,
~Jason
This is the current wheel/tire combo. Ugly, I know, but pick your own once it's yours. I choose these wheels out of my shop because they had the tires I wanted.
