Bypassing J-41476 cover alignment tool?
My question is:
Has anyone tried to get by without using a J-41476 tool to align the front and rear LS1 cover? I've heard the horror stories about not using this tool. I just don't want to spend $400+ for the damn thing.
I was thinking of using a small chisel punch and peening the cover and block just a bit (don't want to cause a leak, just a mark), in several different areas before I remove the cover and then aligning the "peens" when re-installing them.
What do you guys think?
P.S. my very first post hehe

do the pan first with at least two bolts in the front side of the covers and then torque the rear two screws to 106 inch lbs and the front two to 18 ftlbs. Then the rest to 18lbs. Use a tad bit of blk RTV on the corners too.
