They always used to have them on santa ana canyon between weir and imperial and also when they have those ones on the side of the freeway onramps just hammer a gear and shut your car off a ways before the sniffers coast thru them hit the key and motor away

I've seen one on a signaled freeway on ramp here in the Valley some years ago.

legally you don't have to stop or pop your hood.

pulled from a local forum:

Do not allow them to stick it to you and think the constitution is something they can wipe their asses with. Laws are in place to protect our rights and not allow bullshit like this to go on.

Man those are gnarly, haven't seen a computerized one. They just have a cop that points a certain car out and you have to load up on this road mobile dyno looking thing.

I've seen the remote ones the 210 westbound on ramps between the 605 and Pasadena.

and others have seen them on the 5:

Check out this post I made back in April when I passed one here in San Diego in my neighborhood (well known for import racers), snapped a couple of pics.

Wow, that's BS. I'm completely smog legal, but I would hate to be asked to test (I'm usually running late somewhere). So if you decline, does your car now get flagged for "Test only" sites at smog time?

What's interesting about the those smog stations they have put on the on ramps is that the infrared beam passes through the smoke coming from the exhaust, I don't know about you guys but my car does not shoot that much smoke, if it does I don't think it would be labeled a gross polluter as barely anything comes out the back. Really should be no worry unless you smoke like a diesel. I would love to know to what extent they would label a "gross polluter".

Ohh and for these roaming smog stations there is a sign that says surveyor ahead and then you see cones, once you see this I would say turn around if possible or turn down a side street, they do not have or at least I have not heard of them having cops sit on side streets like they do with sobriety check points.

No dude. The one in San Marino was really in San Marino. It was near Huntington Dr. and Virginia. The one in Pasadena is in that location since its on California and Marengo.

To the people who have posted up the location of these checkpoints, thank you. Until we can get concrete info on the legality and the "requirement" about following through with these checks, posting the location of the checkpoints will still be beneficial.

Ive seen them around and I actually been signaled to pull up to one here in Baldwin park a while back. I wasn't sure what it was until I seen a small car ramp they had set up. It was CHP that was running it. Luckily for what ever reason one of the officers asked me what year was my car and told him it's an 02 and asked me to pull out and leave. So not sure why they let me go, but I would have been screwed.
