i took off the water pump in my LT1 more times than i care to remember, but that was years ago. Not that hard. I would like to believe, after numerous times, that i took it off and re-install it within 30 minutes.

Good luck.

HAHA thanks. whats involved. or the process.

is this below considered applicable

1) Remove the air intake plumbing;
2) Drain the coolant and disconnect the coolant lines. Be very very careful not to splash your Optispark with coolant.
3) Unplug the fans (remember the plugs are underneath), and pull the fans - don't try to pull them from the top - unhook them from their clips and navigate them underneath the car -there is actually enough room to do this even without the car on stands!
4) There are 5 bolts on the pump and one stud with bolts holding the air pump. Loosen the air pump and push it aside, and curse at the stud for a while as you try to get the second nut off. Eventually get it off, and unbolt the others. Make sure any water temp sensor connection has been disconnected.
5) Take a rubber (not a steel hammer!) mallet and whack the top of the pump to loosen it. Don't go crazy on it. Remember that the Optispark distributor is right behind it.
5) Sit back, nurse your wounds, and have a beer.

By the way, since you are this far, you may want to seriously consider taking the next steps and replacing your optispark and ignition wires - if you have 70k or more on it, it is only a matter of time before it dies. A couple of extra steps, and you're good to go.

that sounds about right. i am pretty sure i did not take the fans out. but i have small hands so that might not apply to you.

EWP will yeild a marginal hp gain. It is more efficient at low rpms and a little less efficient at high rpms than the stock wp from what I've read. I've installed countless stock and EWP's. It is not that difficult and I would just do it yourself. It's just a fuse hoses, 6 bolts, and two gaskets. Like mentioned, don't forget the WP splined coupler.

These might help a little:

#39 in the second diagram. It goes in between the water pump and the timing cover. Just make sure it goes back in place with the new water pump.

Just take your time, it's not too difficult. Make sure you use new gaskets, clean the block surface thoroughly. Use a little bit of rtv on the bottom bolts on each side as they go inside the water jacket. torque the bolts to 30 ft.lbs. If you have emissions still equiped, you will have to move the AIR pump and AIR pump bracket out of the way, you don't have to completely remove the air pump, just set it aside.
