Selling a car in CA that is broken down?
My gf's car broke down. It's old, tired, not worth fixing, and she would like something a little newer. The car can't even drive much less start, but we would still like some money for it, for either parts, scrapping, or if someone wants a cheap project car. It's a 95 Mirage 1.8L, registered until 9/2013.
Normally you would have the smog the car within 90 days before selling, obviously this won't be happening. Would we need to register it as non-op if we wanted to transfer the title to sell it to a private party?
What if a scrap or salvage yard wants it, how does that work?
Thanks

Shame to see such a great DD scrapped... but hey, it's your car. Worst case, you have to go to the DMV with the license plates and registration, and have them transfer the cars title to "wrecked" in their system. They give you a piece of paper that the wrecking yards can use. I did this with my donor '01 SS.
What does the Mirage need to be driveable (not enjoyable, just legal and driveable)?
