Front plates in CA

Well, for some information, I'm moving to California about a month from now. I've heard that they require front plates, but I often witness vehicals w/Cali registration having no front plates. Do the cops not care, or is is only for certain county's?
I have no idea, and I don't want to drill into my grill...

it is required, and it all depends on the cop. if he wants to be a dick about it he'll pull you over and give you a fix-it ticket, which is about $10-15. put it on, and get it signed off and take it back off. or just keep it on. whatever works. good luck

I agree with Yaboy. I was ticketed one month after buying my car, for no front license plate. However, if you are lucky as hell like my boyfriend ('82 Black Vette), no front plate since 1999 and has yet to be ticketed. 50/50 chance. Good Luck!

Every late model car comes with provisions to mount a front plate in the US. Most cops could care less, really. What it does come down to though are these two significant issues:
1. No plate gives a peace officer a reason to stop you and check out the occupants and the car itself. Want to be above discretionary review? Comply with the CVC.
2. Many of the red-light cameras and photo radar Cities use rely on the image of the front of the car for driver and plate information. If they cannot identify the license plate because it is missing, they lose out on the cite and subsequent revenue. There is an economic incentive to enforce the front plate law.
I've omitted the plate from my LT1 Camaro and C5 (I think the plates on the front of the cars look like ****), and I have yet to be hassled about it (knock on wood).

On the firebirds we have a cover that you can stick the license plate under. If you get pulled over tell them your outta state and just visiting. but it will give them a reason to pull you over

Only the ******* cops will pull you over for it. I've had not front plate for almost 2 and a half years and got pulled over once for no front plate. It was a $10 fine. I think the second time is $100. I still dont have a front plate, there simply is no where to put it.

Damn right it all depends on how much of a dick the cop is. I've been pulled over for not having one and gave him the excuse that there is no mounting to put a plate on. He let me go and no probs. since. Ever happens again that excuse will immediately go into action hopefully with the same outcome...nock on wood.

To add to what Micheal has said, also in such cities as Santa Monica the Parking Enorcement will stop you and issue you a citation if you are driving around. They will also walk up and down street just for this sole purpose. My wife and I never have had a front plate on our Z28 nor the SS. The Z28 was ticketed while I was driving for no front plate. Since the Z28 is no longer a street car, I replaced my billet grille on the SS with the front plate grille of the Z28. We don't need any more hassles, especially since we like visiting that area so much. So remember, it is not only the cops you need to worry about, it is the Parking Enforcement. I have never been citied by a CHP or LAPD for no front plate, even if I was pulled over.

i drove around for three years now and was asked once were my front plate was and told him that the bracket broke and a new one was on the way (but it wasn't). it all depends on the area you are in.

I actually had a cop pull me over on the way to Oxnard to get my car tuned that pulled me over, but ended letting me go WITHOUT a ticket. He said he just pulls people over when he gets bored. Other than that, I've never been bothered by any other cops for not having my front plates
