Default modified exhaust ticket?

ok so i got pulled over for some stupid reason. i got a ticket for having the tail light covers, no front plate, as of which i dont care about either of those. but also he got me for a modified exhaust (headers). all he saw was that no egr was hooked up to the exhaust. he did not see that i had no cats. he said i will have to take it to a smog referee to have it singed off. is there any ways around this?

Sorry, no way around it. I got nailed the same way you did and I had heads/cam/LT headers, etc. I had to put it all back to stock and take it to the referee.

You actually have no choice in the matter. You have to put it back to stock so it passes, or there will eventually be a warrant out for your arrest. The referee is worse than a test only, they do a VERY detailed visual, i.e., using mirrors and such to make sure your cats are in place, 02's are hooked up, etc. Good luck

Well, if it's true you can pay a fine rather than go to a referee, then I got totally screwed. I wasn't in the mood to put my heads/cam and all back on just to get it smogged in another year, so out of frusteration I sold it and got a Vette. The Vette is also modified, but I learned my lesson the first time. Don't give them a reason to pull you over in the first place, like doing 92 in a 40 and you won't have that "modified exhaust" problem.

I don't know if you can refuse, but i broke my hood release so when a cop asks to pop the hood, I can honestly say "Hood latch is broken, I can't."

Have the cable come out in a different location only I know about, just yank it and the hood pops open. (hidden)
