Thanks for all the input guys!
I'll probably end up going with a 5.3L, I'll just have to test drive both engines when I get back to the states.
My parents and sister both own Durango's, parents had the heads warp and tranny go out at about 70k. My sister has the "hemi" Durango and my dads Z71 Silverado with the 327 will probably smoke that Durango. It feels twice as powerful.
GM has just done my family very well, not impressed with Dodge.......but thats just our experience with them. Theres good and bad apples that come out of every assembly line, I guess.
But, I mean c'mon a Chevy 327/350.....I'll depend on that engine, any day

I only have experience with the Hemi Durangos, but comparing it to a Silverado is apples to oranges (truck vs. SUV). I doubt an 04 crew cab Silverado could keep up with a Durango, it just doesn't have the power and the weight is comparable (lighter models may be competitive). GM just lags in the power department, they eventually catch up though.

I test drove the Expedition, Explorer, Tahoe, Suburban, and the Durango in 04 and hands down, the Durango whooped them all, it wasn't even a contest. Only the Navigator was better, but just too expensive for what you get in return.

FWIW, 1 friend has almost 200k on his Hemi Durango, another around 125k, only problem was electrical, and it turned out to be the battery. This generation of Dodges is different than the previous generation, and I speak from personal experience since I had 3 Dodges as company cars. And you're right, there are bad apples in the bunch from every manufacturer.

The Tahoe is not a bad choice, I just think there are better options.

Are you going through a dealer or are you buying person to person?

Hey Braunbeck,
I need to sell or trade in my TA for a Tahoe. I'm stationed in WA state, but originally from CA.
I'd be interested in yours if I were closer and everything, most I want to spend is about $17k though, but thanks!

To be honest you can find some really good deals, a guy I know purchased a 03 Yukon w/5.3, that was spotless for 12k. Had 80k miles if I remember correct.

Default Get the 4.8

I own both 4.8 (2007) and the 5.3 (2009) tahoes. The 4.8 was for a DD for my wife and the 5.3 for me...thought I needed the extra power. Instead I got a 7mpg less on a good day and with 3.50 gas that adds up fast. I pull a 7100 lb boat in the Austin hills with no problems with the 4.8. The 5.3 stays home more b/c of the gas mileage difference.

My Silverado is a 4.8 and I have driven a friends 5.3 Silverado. Only difference I noticed in acceleration was above 50 MPH. Although if you tow, the 5.3 is a better platform. I think it all comes down to what you can get a good deal on. Just don't get a Dodge.
