Default Smog Today in the Hoe

Failed... Visual passed, but for some reason, the DMV has my 02 Z71 tahoe set to perform the "Idle, and 2500rpm" test, not on the rollers running 15mph, and 25mph (which I anticipated). Anyway, idle numbers ended up failing me on my new motor with 4000 miles.

Idle
Hydrocarbons (Parts per million) - Max(100) / Ave(26) / Measured(90)
Carbon Monoxide - Max(1.00) / Ave(0.00) / Measured(1.04)

2500RPM
Hydrocarbons (Parts per million) - Max(180) / Ave(11) / Measured(11)
Carbon Monoxide - Max(1.10) / Ave(0.10) / Measured(0.08)

So idle is killing me, and 2500 is the best thing ever. Pretty damn good so... Is it just tuned a little rich at idle or something?

Cats were warm, he did a 1 minute higher rev before testing the 2nd time, and still failed. Still running the 5.3 injectors that came off the original motor. Doesn't have AIR or EGR, so no way of setting the AIR fixed on (which would be cool). It's only CO% that was above, HC PPM was just under max (which I'm not to TOO thrilled about).

Should I lean it a bit at idle? Can't smell fuel in the exhaust real heavy, but doesn't mean it's not there!

Please guys, would appreciate a little help. Not real good in this area. Should I send it back to Wait 4 Me and have him retune it to lean out the idle? It's currently idling at just over 700 rpm. Max is 1.00, I'm at 1.04, so it's RIGHT at the max. Needs to be substantially lower, and I know it can be, the cam is TINY, and on a 114LSA.

ethanol will cure that problem just run like a 20 percent mix with your gas and it will pass with ease.

I sent you an email a couple weeks back asking for your # again, I know it's 1968, but I can't remember the prefix, lol. Haven't seen your car at the shop lately either, you still breathing?

We have a station that sells E85 where I live... should I just rock the e85 and see what happens, or should I run a mix of E85 (since I can't get pure ethanol)?

Good idea on the ethanol. Will E85 work? My car just failed last week. It did the worst on the NOx and HC, not by much but it did fail. Oh and my stupid gas cap failed too

How bout running the AIR or EGR on during the test, would either of those help any?

ya the only thing is the molecules of ethanol are bigger so it will make your car run leaner so use just enough to get it to work. I think denatured alcahol works also you can get that stuff at like home depot.

both of those have very low emissions when burned so it should not take a whole lot.

LOL I hear ya, I'd rather not, with it being THIS close. That's why I went with such a mild build for the Tahoe. =)

Okay, ran a 33% E85 mix with 91 octane gas, failed even worse today...
This time, my CO% passed (barely, max of 1.00, measured .90, last time was 1.04), but my HC was WAY higher, max of 100, measured 90 last time, and on E85 measured 151. My %CO2 measurements were higher at both idle and 2500rpm, 2500 still passed very clean, but idle sucked.
