Default 01 Black Camaro SS

It has 74k miles, 6spd. I haven't gone to check it out yet, I just saw it on craigslist. Looks to be pretty clean from the pictures..

He has it listed for 10.5k, which sounds pretty high to me, KBB is 8k for excellent, 7700 for very good, and 7500 for good condition.

What do you guys think?

10.5k doesn't sound to bad to me. If the car is really clean id try for 9k or so.

Need a lot more info on the car but remember that asking prices are just that, asking. Once you see the car in person, and have cash in hand, then the ball is in your court. If you love the car, he won't turn down $9,000 - $9,500. If he insists on more than book value, he will be waiting a long time.

Here are the pictures on the craigslist post. I emailed him yesterday but haven't heard anything back. I was hoping to go see it tomorrow. I know his asking price is high, I just wasn't sure what a good (for me) price would be.

he needs to wash the engine bay or you can..but i would look into a carfax just to make sure it hasnt been wrecked...and lok for the usual wear spots ie: carpet ,headliner, etc the stuff that you are going to want to repair or replace/ upgrade as that isnt free and you need to look at what that will cost when and if you purchase the car

I heard back from him, he wrote a pretty long email describing the car. I probably won't be able to go see it for another week or so.

He said he rearended someone supposedly going under 5mph, and the front bumper was scuffed and cracked just under the hood. It wasn't repaired, and there has been no paint or body work.

He also said it has some small scratches, door dings etc consistent with being his DD for a period of time. It also has bubbles on the t-top center beam, which from what I hear is fairly common. He also has receipts for regular maintenance that has been performed.

I will obviously look into the front bumper, and see if there seems to be any other damage. Given these addition details, what do you guys think its worth?

Thanks again.

You said that KBB indicated a price of $7,500 in 'good' condition in your zip code. That would be absolute top $$$ for this car describing it the way you just did.

Thank's for the input. When I was looking at KBB earlier, I didn't check the box that it was an SS since I don't usually bother looking at the value of options on older cars.

KBB for an 01 camaro SS and not just a z28 in my area is 9.5k for excellent, 9.2k for very good, and 9k for good condition.

Thanks again NC01TA.

You're welcome! Yeah, make sure you check all those KBB boxes. They can be easy to miss and then they will give you wrong pricing. Been there, done that. Looks like $9,000 now is your absolute top $$.

I went and saw the car on Sunday.

The driver's side window goes up really slowly, and will stop partway up. If you wait a few minutes and try again, it will eventually make it all the way. I need to look into that.

The rear hatch also doesn't stay open, I assume one of the shocks is blown.

One of the door speakers is blown and will need to be replaced, and the cd player doesn't work.

The front bumper has spiderweb cracks in the clearcoat from when he rearended someone going ~5mph as I mentioned earlier. It has some scratches, rock chips, door dings etc., nothing too crazy though. The headlights are also pretty hazy.

The interior was clean, and the seats were in good shape. He has service records for oil changes every 3000miles, etc. Rear differential seal was replaced around 50,000 miles because it was leaking. It has new tires, but they are some random japanese brand.

I offered him 8200, and he came down to 9000. Someone else is supposedly looking at it early this week, and we will see what happens after that. I'm going to look into the problems listed above and see what they will cost, but I was thinking of coming up to around 8500 or 8600max. What do you guys think? It seems to be in pretty good shape mechanically.

Edit* I forgot to mention, there are bubbles in the paint on the roof "hoop". From what I've read, this is a fairly common problem.
It also seems like the window motor and rear strut are pretty cheap fixes.

Many pros and cons here. The best part of this entire potential sale is the detailed service records. That's a very good thing, but for someone that seemed to care for his car he sure is letting it go by not fixing things. Maybe it is just a financial problem for him but that is a gray area. You are quite right about fixing up the problems cheaply. They are not deal breakers. I think your offer is strong and that you should hold firm there. If someone does show up and grabs the car then you haven't really lost something special. There will be others. Be patient. I think you are going to be OK here.

We settled on 8700. I came up in price, because I went back to KBB and actually selected the options it had, and kbb good was 9600, and fair was 8850. The first time i looked at kbb, i didnt select any options, and when i came up with 9000 as a price, I only selected "SS" and not leather, T-tops, etc. I think I got a pretty good deal... now is when people will probably tell me I overpaid

You certainly were in the ballpark. Enjoy the car! That is all that matters
