Default 9 bolt

I've heard a 9 bolt is pretty damned strong. Would I be able to get one, put it under my car, and run a rear tire with an offset for a 3rdgen camaro and the usual 4th gen offset in the front? Might give it a little more lip also. Just needin' opinions. Didn't know if this should be in the wheels and tires because I'm asking about wheel offsets or whatnot. What offset do 3rdgens run anyways?

it's a 9 inch or 12 bolt not a 9 bolt, either way you could do it but probably not without some mini tubs

Some 3rd gens did come with a 9 bolt rear and its a little stronger than the 10 bolt, so I've heard. I didn't think there was such a thing either until a friend with an 89 Formula proved me wrong when he had it on a lift.

I don't think I would go thru a bunch of work swapping for a 9 bolt, the small strength gain wouldn't worth all the effort not to mention finding a matching set of wheels with the correct offset for the 4th gen front and 3rd gen rear.

of course there is a 9 bolt. it was called the austrailian 9 bolt. it was considered and upgrade and higher performance in regards to the stock 10 bolt. it was stronger, but only marginaly. there is almost no aftermarket support for it, especially after so many years have gone by. putting a 3rd gen 9 bolt under any year 4th gen would be a down grade. either build your 10 bolt or upgrade to something else, depending on what youre doing and making power-wise.

3rd gens had different offsets in front to rear. they werent compatable, other then being able to put fronts on the rears, but not rears on the fronts. i dont know the numbers offhand, but the rears i think are more of a deep dish style, when compared to the front.

The 9 bolt would be a direct swap. Had 1 in my 85. All you would need to do is buy 1.25" spacers and your stock wheels will fit fine. Vette brakes or skulte performance sells them.

So the strength isnt worth it? I've just heard its stroner but didn't know how much. I think I'll just do a 9". Be nice to have a fat lip on the rear though :-/.

its not worth it. why bother going 15yrs back in technology and messing with spacers. a built 10 bolt would be stronger anyway.

the only older rear end that could be an upgrade is an old school 12 bolt.

Didn't SLP contract Dana to build a small run of 3.54 geared D44s for 3rd Gen F-bodies (option for the first Firehawks?)? Any of those floating around the internet?
Yeah, that Aussie 9 bolt came as a 3.27, and you could only swap in a 3.70 gearset.
I think 3rd Gen wheels have close to zero offset, give or take 1/2", depending on FR or RR and 15x7 or 16x8. The rearends are about 2 inches narrower, but aren't the bodies/fenders also slightly?

yes they did i remember summit clearing them out for slp years ago have fun finding one. the 9 bolt is a bit stronger but youll losse your abs but you can run 3rd gen rear offset. I'm running the oposite on my 3rd gen, a 4th gen rear and spacers in the front to fit 4th gen wheels.
