does Nitto even make a tire wider than 315 on a 17 inch wheel?

Brother, the Sumi HTRZ is 1/3 the price of the GSD3s. Barely a comparison here anyway...they are technically the same size, they both roll, and are made of rubber.

that would be incorrect. section width IS overall width.

Yep, I agree with every word you said, however, in my opinion someone should do something about this (sarcasm) and change the whole specs thing on tires, it's very misleading when a new person wants to buy a tire, sees width section of 12.6 on the 1 tire and sees the same width in tire spec on a different tire, compares prices to find the one tire cost 1/3 what the other one does and decides to buy the cheaper one THINKING they're the same in width, just different rubber as u said, kinda unfair ya know.

Anyway, in my case personally I searched for months before buying my tires, spent $700 on a pair but I know I got the best and it's actually what the specs said about it.

315 sumitomos are a joke sitting next to a GSD3.

right now i have 315 NittoDRs and its about the same difference when comparing them to my 315 BFG KDs i'm about to put on.

Back from the dead!!

The Sumitomos are at least 12" wide. I measured mine. The GSD3s must 13", or MORE!

Sumitomos are gay anyways. I'm going with GSDs next. Though my 315 BFGs look 10x wider than those Sumos.

I put my unmounted Nitto DR 315's next to my mounted 285 GSD3 and the Nitto was only like a 1/4" at best wider than the GSD3, I didn't actually measure though. I'd say the Nitto 315 is more like a 295 maybe 300mm.

Sumitumos, and Nittos usually do run small. But, my 335/30/18 Nitto DR's are the same specs that they're rated at. I measured them earlier, and they were just a hair over 13" for the section width. And they're rated at 13.2". I will agree that my 275 and 315 Nittos were on the skinny side of things though. I have a 275 BFG T/A KD laying around, and my 275 Nittos were an inch skinnier than it was. Section width on the Nittos was something like 9 3/4-10", and the BFG was 11".

Man I love those GSD3's. I have the Nitto 315's out back. It's kind of a blessing that they run narrow, less chance of rubbing (didn't do BFH mod).

I'm looking to replace my 315/40/17s Sumos. Do you think the 285/40/17 GSD3 would be comparible for width on an 17x11" wheel?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....GSD3&tab=Sizes

According to the reviews - the wear is great too. I have less than 20K miles on my Sumos and they are bald in the center (common, so I've read. Even with 28 psi, so it's not over inflated). I'm willing to spend more to get a better tire thats comparible in width.

I ask b/c according to tirerack, the 315 Sumo on an 11" wheel has a tread width of 12.6" and the 285 GSD3 on a 10" is 11.3". Is it safe to say the true difference in width will be hard to notice?
