tire width?

how wide of a tire can i throw on a 8.5" or 9.5" rim? 295s? any ifo would be helpful thanx.

on the 9.5 you can fit a 315's
on the 8.5 you can maybe fit 275's

Per manufacturer recommendation a 275 is probably the widest on a 8.5" rim. 285 on a 9.5" rim.

I would NEVER put a 295 or a 315 on such a small rim. Defeats the purpose, is not recommended, and in short dangerous.

295 require a 10" rim minimum and a 315 requires a 11".

I was simply told one size bigger than recommended is okay, anything more can be dangerous.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a bigger tire AND WHEEL out back than up front, but when you have a big tire forced onto a wheel that it was not designed to fit on, you are exerting forces onto the tire beyond what is is capable of withstanding.

Cramming a 12" wide tire onto a 9" wide wheel forces the sidewalls and corners into an undesigned shape and can cause a premature failure - and flying down the expressway and have a tire prematurely fail is not my cut of tea.

Can I remind you of Ford Explorer and Firestone? A perfect example of "forcing" a tire to do something it isn't designed for.
