Tires-vs-ABS?? Can I put a wider tire on the rear of my 2000 TA without messing up my ABS. Some mech's said I coul and some said it would mess it up. I want to keep the same size rims (17") I just want to put a wider tire on the rear and keep a stock size tire on the front. I think that a wider stance in the rear gives a muscle car a more aggresive look. Can anyone fill me in and let me know if I can do this with no problems. Thanks

The width won't hurt your ABS, the diameter will. As long as your overall diameter stays the same you'll be fine. The common upgrade on 17's is 315/30/17 and your diameter will be the same, and no ABS issues.

You run into problems when your front and rear diamters are too much different. For example, I have a 25.7" front and a 28" rear, when first drinving the car, for the first few miles every time you step on the brakes, the system thinks you need ABS and activates it, makes for some issues if you really needed to stop quick. Once you go a few miles the tsystem really senses something is wrong and deactivtes the ABS all toghether, throwing a "Brake and ABS" idiot light on your cluster, in this mode the brakes work fine, and I am actually guessing that the ABS is altogether deactivated, although I have never actually tried to see if it worked.

I would think 315/35/17 would be a closer height to stock, but I could be wrong. As mentioned, width will not cause any issues, as long as the height is within 1" of the front. If you do decide to go with a taller rear, you will get a "ABS INOP and BRAKE" light on the dash. Not really a huge deal, it's never effected me in any negative way as far as braking goes.

My bad, i was thinking 18" tires, the 17" come in 315/35's, and the 18's usually come 315/30.

They couldn't have said it better OP. I mean if some guys go from having 16x8's all the around and go to say 17x9 or 17x9.5 in the front and 17x11 or 18x10.5 in the rear with no problems as far as lights coming on on the gauges or the brakes not working right, I think you'll be ok, LOL. But I do hope all this helps though.

Helped alot, really appreciate it. Next time I get tires I will definitely be going with this setup, I think it gives the car a more aggresive look. Thanks to all again!!!

I don't run this car at ALL!!! This car is my "baby" and I treat her like one. DOn't get me wrong I get down on her every now and then, but I don't race her. Just doing mods for the sound and looks, I LOVE this car.....

I want to know if there’s a size tire out that will not make the ABS light come on. I have 15 x 3.75 Race Star.
Right now I’m looking at a 165/80/15 but I have a friend that runs that tire and it comes on for him.
If this is a common problem will this effect my breaking? This is a 90% track car/ 10% street car I don’t want any problems!!!! If I need to get a different tire I will.

It all depends on the difference, a 165/80/15 is around a 25.7" front, right about the same as the stock tires, if you have a bigger rear, say a 27" or 28" its gonna fault the ABS.
Your ABS will not work once the fault is detected, usaually like 25-30 secs of sustained speed around 40MPH sets mine off, but before hand any hard braking actually actuates the ABS even though you dont need it, you feel the pulsing in the brakes. But once the lights are on and the fault is detected, the ABS is deactivated and your brakes work as normal, just no abs

Probably, but some folks have tried going with 285's or 295's. I don't think they reccomend the 295's on anything smaller than a 10" wide rim though. 285's are't that much wider, and there is a better more affordable selection for 275's. IF you could get 295's than you could gain better than 3/4" tire width. That would be beneficial, and look better.
