Stripping/Painting C6 Wheels Advice
Hey everybody! I had some questions as far as the corvette C6 wheel goes. I had tried before to refinish them and remove all the curb rashes. Had everything sanded down primer went on fine and smooth. Then sprayed Duplicolor silver wheel paint on and got small bubbles and looked like the paint was lifting in some areas. So I just bought a used wheel off eBay and kept the other as a spare.
Well now I am wanting them gloss black and to fix curb rash. So I am asking:
- how can I strip these down to bare metal?
- are they powder coated?
- are the magnesium or some weird metal that I needs to seal before paint
- what "strippers" haha have you guys had the best luck with?
P.S. I have refinished several sets of wheels in the past but something was different with the c6 wheel that the paint would not cure properly....

Well It must be powder this stuff is on there very well. I have tried every stripping gel, compund you can think off. Finally went out an bought a small pneumatic angled die grinder and some crazy kind of abrasive pads that eat through the paint pretty well. So I am just stripping it to bare metal.
Here is the sander I bought:

I tried the duplicolor wheel paint on my wheels a few times as well. I have 2010 Camaro wheels. I primed them and then used the wheel paint. It coated well for the most part, but it was really grainy in corners and the lug wells. The people at Duplicolor said that it was grainy from holding the can too far from the wheel. So, I tried to redo 2 of them holding it closer. They came out a little better, but not much. One of the wheels has a lot of little bubbles on it too. I can;t remember if that was from the paint or clear though. I'm thinking it powedercoating or pay a paint shop. I don't really think I'm going to be able to get a good finish with the Duplicolor stuff. Hopefully you have better results.

I have had great results with duplicolor rattle can paint before. I cleaned the crap out of these wheels the time before, just couldn't get the paint to lay down well. In my opinion its just dumb to powder coat wheels. Its just a matter of time until you have road rash, then what? With paint you can easily touch the road rash up.
So thats why I am trying to get back to basics. I have gotten one wheel back to bare aluminum.
I'll post some pics of my progress. With the angled die grinder I bought and those sanding pads I can get the wheel back to something that you could even polish if you want. But dont get me wrong this takes a long time. I'll let you know how long per wheel since I finally figured out what worked when I do the others.
