After reading this thread I went and checked my spare. Wow was I glad I looked at it. Oh well it is 19 years old and never been used.

Y2000TA,

Did you check the date code on the tire? Can you tell us what it is?

Anyone else get the Continental CST17 T125/70R16 from TireRack and check the date code?

I intend to utilize the 5/24-5/27 Discount Tire Memorial Day Weekend 10% promotion to get BFG G-Force Comp 2 A/S tires to replace the 21 year old OEM’s on my WS6. Trying to figure out where to purchase a spare. Discount does not show T135/60R16 or T125/70R16 as available on the consumer website. However, my local store checked their database and show some higher priced options in one of those 2 sizes as potentially available. Employee was not certain they could match TireRack CST17 pricing of $112.90, though.

I ordered the T135/70R16 from Tire Rack. I'm having it mounted today. No, I didn't think to check the date code. I'll do that when I pick it up this afternoon.

Update, my spare that I just got from Tire Rack I believe has a 2012 date code. I wish I'd checked it before having it mounted, but it's better than nothing.
One other downside of note, the T135/70R16 is too big to fit in the spare tire well. I didn't think the 1/2" or so of additional tire height would make that much of a difference. I'll futz with it some more to see if I can make it fit. I'd rather have the taller spare than a narrow and shorter T125/60R16 if I can make it work. I carry a small air pump with me. I may try letting the air out of it to see if it'll fit that way and pump it up if I need to put it on the car. I'll keep an eye out for a factory size replacement either way unless I go with 18 or 19 inch wheels in the future and use run-flats. It wouldn't be that big of a deal around town, but I like to take the car on road trips and no spare on a road trip is just not something I want to do, even with AAA.

Thank you for the update. Very helpful information. I wish Y2000TA would check back in and provide the date code on the T125/70R16 from TireRack.

By deflating the tire, I could just barely fit it in the spare tire compartment. The T125/70-16 is probably a better option if the factory size isn't available.

Thank you for letting us know. I am probably going to stick w/ my 1998 spare for a while longer. I already had my appointment w/ Discount Tire and did not do anything with the spare. Prices on the T125/70R16’s the Discount salesman pulled up in-store were $140’s and $150’s plus labor and disposal. I am not going w/ TireRack if those tires are 6-7 years old already.

For anyone still looking for a decent spare tire replacement I purchased the Hankook 125/70R16 from tire rack. It has a date code of 1319 and a little wider tire tread than the Continental. Also about 30 bucks cheaper.

Just had mine blow out while in the hatch. Never used. I thought someone had shot my car (I live in Arizona, so that's always possible). Are you certain this size will fit in the notch in the side of the hatch?

Thanks

May or may not help, but Porshe uses a 17" spare thats one of those ones you need a compressor to inflate before install.
If a guy could find the right wheel maybe it's an option? its not real wide, Look at early 2000 Porsche 911 spare tire..

My spare, always in the car, back seat folded down, I do a lot of travelling. The compact spare is in it's normal location.

Just bought and mounted that tire and it "depends" on what you mean by it "fits". Yes, it will fit in the spare tire well on the side of the car. "No", you can't lock it down with the twist nut and rod like the original tire and "No" it doesn't fit well underneath the rear plastic trim. It causes the trim to bulge and look stupid. I'm looking for the OEM look, as I wouldn't ever use the tire but I wanted my car "complete". It's in excellent condition. Everything is original, undented, scratched, marred....except that I have no spare tire.
